? for the Kayak guys

What you think about the Ocean Drifter?

I'm asking cause i got a $100 gift card to academy and want to put it towards a kayak. It shows on the internet that they are selling them for $599.99, I have not been to academy to check on the price there but just want to know if its a good one to start in.

I have read and read and then read some more on almost every kayak out there and only really settling on this one cause i got the gift card but what i have read is that it is a ok kayak.

Thanks, Micah

i dont know anything about the Ocean Drifter so i cant give u any info on them.i would try to find a place in ur area that sells yaks and has some demo boats that u can try out first. thats just my opinion! the few times i have been yaking were really fun! i'd like to do some more yaking!

Micah 12-26-2009 12:22 AM

what do you fish out of?

Ray 12-26-2009 12:24 AM

Did you check out Ship to Shore on Lake St.?

Micah 12-26-2009 12:26 AM

Not yet Ray. The only reason i mentioned this kayak is that i just got the gift card to academy. i plan on checking out Ship to Shore just to look and see.

fishmaster911 12-26-2009 12:30 AM

my dad has 2 Native Watercraft Ultimate 12 Kayaks.

fishmaster911 12-26-2009 12:37 AM

i dont yak that much. the reason i say go try some demos is because there r alot of good ones out there to look into. its what u prefer in a yak!

Micah 12-26-2009 12:39 AM

I just want something to go hit up big lake and maybe lacassine.

fishmaster911 12-26-2009 12:47 AM

there ya go ! it's a blast! there is some other guys on here u can ask that know alot more than me.

Micah 12-26-2009 12:59 AM

The way yak'em talks about it is what really got me interested. The more i thought about it the more i really want to get out there and do it.

For a first yak the drifter will work great, it is a barge though,,, look at other options and try before you buy,,,,,I've paddled the drifter, big game prowler, prowler 13, manta ray, ultimate, and magic.... I'm stuck on Native products, check them out,,,, also look at classifieds for a used one. Jdub

i would def wait for a demo day if you can.

unfortunately if your like me, you cant wait, i havent paddled the drifter, but i can tell you it will probably be a great beginner boat and thats all. If you arent gonna be going a whole lot then try it, but you really do get what you pay for in a yak.

Check classifieds as well as bckfc.org, and laffayettekayakfishing.com

let me know if you need any help

Micah 12-28-2009 06:31 AM

I went to academy and changed my mind on the drifter.

I watched a video with some guys fishing out of some heritage redfish and being able to stand up with no problem.

If i could find a really good used one i would buy it now but if not then i'll just wait and go talk to the people at ship to shore.

Gander Mountain in Beaumont has a dozen or so different models also.

Micah 12-28-2009 06:49 AM

I'll have to check that out.....thanks guys for the comments.

If yall ever run across some one wanting to sell one or see one in the paper or something let me know.

yak'em-n-stack'em 12-28-2009 10:42 AM

I fish out of a redfish 12. Love that boat

Micah 12-28-2009 12:59 PM

I've been looking at the Redfish and they look like really good boats.

I seen they make a 10ft, is there a big difference in the 10 and 12?

yak'em-n-stack'em 12-28-2009 03:24 PM

12 foot will be considerably faster and have more room

fishmaster911 12-28-2009 03:41 PM

Really look into having room. Ur limited on what u put in ur boat! The more room the better

Micah 12-28-2009 03:51 PM

I dont think i have ever put this much time into buying something but i guess it pays off in the end.

I like to get it before duck season is over so i can try and hunt out of it, we got lots of marsh that i could get to if i used a kayak.

yall ever try hunting out of one?
