Here yall can talk about fly fishing rods,tips,tactics,baits,etc!

im curious right now, after my fly fishing trip, im hooked on it!!

Question- at academy they sell a lil combo, would this work for bream fishing/crappie??

Check the weight of it first. I used a 12 weight Sage for Red fish..

The Pfleuger Medalist model flyrod setup at Academy is awesome for bream and bass. I believe it is a 5/6 weight. Can't throw and large lures on it such as those "fly" frogs. I really only learned to work #8 and #10 topwater poppers well, and that's all I ever really needed to use.

huntin fool, i used to fly fish west fork a lot with little poppin bugs, bluegill and bass love em!!!

Yes it would work hfool. I had my 7 year old out a few nights ago throwing a popping bug and the bream were nailing it. He loves to fly fish now.

okay thanks, i may look at academy just to see details on the rod..so is popping bugs good for bream?

Popping bugs are great for bream, Look up Accardo, Betts or Pecks all make excellant bream bugs, Have caught a ton on the Accardo "Miss Prissy". Check out the Bass popping bugs also. Tell you what I have. I have a 9' custom made fly rod in a 8 weight, It's light enough to catch bream, but still has enough backbone to catch reds. Caught several 27" reds but it was all it wanted!!!!!! JUST HANG ON & WISH IT WELL!!!! A FREAKING BLAST!

okay man thanks! After lunch, once i finish homework, may run to academy to check it out...any of yall use those little nimphs and an indicator to catch bream?

Nimphs work also, I personally like the popping bugs, Academy should have them, I know walmart sells either the Accardo or Betts kit. Comes with an assortment of popping bugs, 10 in the kit, I think.

does walmart sell a fly kit? it doesnt have to be a $300 one just one to catch bream...saltwater rod aswell got suggestions?

Thats why I like the 8 weight, Has enough back bone for salt but is light enough for bream. Yes walmart has a kit with popping bugs. Academy has a salt fly kit, Deceiver type flies in it. The deceivers are awesome for trout under lights at night.

that's the bug we used to use all the time, the miss prissy....

all you gotta do Fool is hit the boat docks and pop that thing around the pads and cypress knee's around those docks......

just twitch that bug a little.....bump...bump...bump.....

laangler, i found one of those in my tackle box! i tied it on my great g-paw's fly rod and went just a min ago, caught 2 bream!

That is pretty much what I got, except the reel is black and rod is dark green. What I learned is that I could just use 4# test on a small spool and make my own leaders. Learn how to tie what's called a "nail knot" and you're good.

Now for redfish...man that would be really intense. The problem I see would be that you wouldn't be able to throw big enough lures with that 5/6 weight. You need more like an 8 weight.
This is solved by just getting a different rod for reds, and just switch out the reels. You can also just change your leader weight by how I mentioned above...saves lots of $$ when deciding on leaders...just get a 80-110 yard spool of whatever pound test and you are good to go. I've even used mine to catch spotted gar; I would use braided 65lb. test as leader and little spider-like flys with a treble attached.
