reduced limits on Black Mallard

What is everyones opinion about this subject. I am seeing more this year than I have ever seen at our lease. I think Texas had a big influence on the reduction from 3 birds to now only being able to shoot one. Texas just doesnt have the habiat that Louisiana has from what I am undestanding they are treating the population as a hole now.

People I know that have leases are like you, they have never seen this many around here.

yak'em-n-stack'em 10-13-2009 08:59 AM

I have only killed a few in my life around Avoyelles parish where I hunt. We mostly have teal, gray ducks, mallard and spoon bill. Are they more of a marsh duck?

SULPHITE 10-13-2009 10:24 AM

I saw quite a few in cameron this past sat.

they are more of a marsh duck but also frequent rice fields and some flooded swamp

RaginCagin 10-13-2009 12:48 PM

The times I would see them would be early in the season. I have even seent them in some flooded cat tail fields we had in the middle of the summer. I thought that was kind of strange.

There is a difference between Black ducks and Mottle ducks or summer mallards. I do not understand the decreased limits since our mottle ducks are not migratory. If you kill a banded mottle duck in SW Louisiana it was probably banded at Rockafeller Refuge. Smartest duck in the marsh and they get that way by living here all their lives. Got to be more to the story than the Feds are advertising.

Marshrat 10-15-2009 10:46 AM

Rockafella Refuge was banding over 700 ducks a night about 2 years ago. This was over about a month long period. There are more mottled ducks now than ever. They are not the easiest to decoy in my opinion, but are all over you during teal season. Can't see any reason for them cutting the limit.

I agree the limit should not be reduced. Also, if you reduce it why go from 3 to 1. At least they could of dropped it to 2. On Pintail, I wish they would at least up the limit to 2 birds.

huntin fool 10-15-2009 03:32 PM

Wood ducks need to stay at 3.
Black ducks need to atleast me 2!!!
Pintail i can't say much on, never killed one

Fool.....nothing like shooting a Drake Pintail......

I could be wrong, but I think some of you may be getting confused. There is a difference between mottled ducks and black mallards, and black ducks. When I was younger, we killed a few and I showed them to my uncle and he said that they were black ducks, not black mallards. I asked him how he could tell the difference, and he said a black mallard is alot bigger, and all of his life he has only ever killed two in SW LA. He said alot of people get them confused because of the color similarity. They are alot bigger he said. He also said they are more common in North LA than down south. I think the LDWF needs to elaborate a little more. This could also be a ploy by them to write more tickets. My uncle said it is very hard to tell the difference.` Just my .02.

RD.....most call all these ducks the same althought they are not. A Black duck limit is one (1) if I remember. However, I do not think we really kill them around here. Mottled duck which stay here year round is what were are talking about. I call a mottled duck a black duck or black mallard like 90% of the South LA hunters do.

Even most biologist and wildlife agents can't tell the difference. There is very little difference in the two.

i guess, ima hafta be very careful come season. We have alot of black mallards/summer ducks whatever you want to call them on the river.

all star rod 10-26-2009 03:43 PM

If you bag 100 of them I bet 99 would be mottle ducks/summer mallards. I really do not know anyone in South LA that killed an actual BLACK MALLARD...

So is mottle duck limit the same?

all star rod 10-26-2009 05:32 PM

I think the limit for Black Ducks is 1.....Again, mottle Duck which is the same as us in LA call black or summer mallards is now 1. It was 3 until this year.
