4/7 - Vermilion Bay

Got invited on a redfish trip in Vermilion Bay Saturday. Fished all the way around marsh island and we only boated about 12-15 reds. Most of the fish were undersized, we kept 4. Very windy, and dirty water. The guys I went with had been doing quite well on the reds on the days prior to our trip.

Thanks for the report. I was supposed to be out there but plans got changed at the last minute.

Can't wait for the bay to get right. The river is falling good finally, so it shouldnt be too long before we see good catches at the reefs at marsh island.

The other boat in our party had a couple decent flounder and did about the same on reds. Tons of baitfish at every spot we pulled up to. Talked to one guy who had made the run from the point to cocodrie and he had some 15 or so nice trout...

I have never made that run. About how far is it?

According to Google Earth that run is about 85 miles ONE WAY. That is way too much gas to burn to catch 15 trout. I bet his truck burns a lot less gas than the boat.

Cajun Outdoors 04-10-2012 03:10 PM

Yeah, the guy had a boat full of extra cans of gas...lol, and he said he tanks up once he makes it there. I'd just as soon trailer the boat...

Mako19 04-10-2012 03:18 PM

Wow. I definitely don't see the point of that. I was thinking 25-30 miles which is still far to run when you can drive there.

Dink 04-10-2012 03:23 PM

I'd for 30the in the boat instead of drive around, but 85 is to much!!

If it was only 25-30 miles I bet you would have a lot more people making that run pretty often to get to some good fishing.

Thanks for vb report....

Thanks for that report on my stompin grounds! Heard bait fish is everywhere out there..soon as the water improves just a little the saber tooth should be on.

meaux fishing 04-10-2012 03:49 PM

Even if he was fishing the islands and the rigs, the point to the west side of raccoon pt is 75 miles and mardi gras rigs is 60 miles... thats just too damn far to run one way

I went out Sunday after church in my new (to me) boat. I started at the hammock and it was really muddy. I then headed south to marsh island and found super slick water between that platform complex and the game warden buildings (northwest of the island). The water was not so muddy and had more of a greenish tint. They had little silver fish busting around all over the place.
Every now and then I'd hear a "bloosh!!" and look to see some big rings in the water. I was throwing topwater and had gulp under a cork on another rod. Didn't get any bites though.
I was just out for about 3 hours and rode around quite a bit to check out the boat.

I hit the weir out of the Worm, for some crabbing with the family. Water was really muddy on that end also...
