Got off graveyards this am and was at calcasieu point for 515am. First one there! Pointed the Baystealth for spicers and made it there just before 6am. Thought they were closed but just no one fishing today. Got my qt of shrimp and off to black lake. Pulled in lake and put trolling motor down about mid way and 2nd or 3rd cast I caught a nice trout. Power pole down and sat there catching my limit and releasing another. Did not need the live shrimp but it was a faster bite using em. Limit by 730. Power pole up and easing my way to the 3.5 feet of water I caught reds at other day. Found one good red and more trout. Trout on every cast for another hour! Decided to go check out north side of pipeline. As soon as I got thru a few birds picking every now and then and more just sitting on the water. Stayed there for another 30 mins catching trout on every cast and then hooked up with a big bull red. Released that one. Decided to come in early so cranked up the Yamaha to leave and right when I get almost to cut to salt ditch more birds picking so stopped to see if any reds. Nope more trout and these are better size 18"-20". After catching and releasing another 10-15 trout I decided to head back to launch wishing I had brought the whole family with me this am. Easy easy fishing. But I saw 2 boats all morning! Great morning and had a lot of fun. Over 50 trout caught this am. There were some pickles mixed in but most over 12". Maybe 10 trout were under 12.

Great Easter morning there....

I've never fished black lake, but may try tomorrow. Have heard that you have to know where to run your boat. Is that true?

Yes it is not the easiest to get into. Also there is some submerged trash out there

BassYakR 04-16-2017 04:23 PM

Probably be alot of damaged rigs due to this report. Lol. I highly advise taking ur time around that place. Lots of things in there to destroy a lower unit or boat hull

Yeah if you haven't been with a guide. I wouldn't run it.
It's claimed a lot of lower units and hulls.

I waited for a real low tide and went in there one day last year and could not believe how many times I ran that north bank and did not hit the piling poles from wat looks to be an old wharf. fairly long dock. I had to of made it in between the poles that are just wide enough for a boat to even go between. U can not see them during high tide. lots of old crab pots on east side just layin on bottom abandoned. and lots of shallow spots. run your depth finder and just go slow paying attn. and u will be ok.

Great report!!

Thanks for the report.... U picked up right where you left off! I never fish black lake because I'm worried about hitting something... Glad to see my fear isn't for nothing. Gonna have to go troll around in there and explore

Awesome as always ! Best part is you seem to be one of the few to give a honest report without the feel to be greedy and not share and you keep succeeding (karma) ! Cudos to ya. Hope your next trip is filled with even more fruits ! I can't get out there right now but hope ya helped someone else to enjoy a trip.
Congrats ! And thanks for the post !

Destroyed my propeller on Saturday in Black Lake. Fortunately, no lower unit damage.

MEM1971 04-17-2017 08:50 PM

where did u hit something to destroy it. please share. hate to hear that. so far ive only hit a crab pot that was abandoned and caught two more with anchor. up close to pipeline on east bank

extremecheddar 04-19-2017 07:23 PM

After further inspection, my prop shaft is bent too. I was on the west end traveling where I normally do. Not sure what I hit, but it was hard.

extremecheddar 04-19-2017 07:36 PM

I was about 200 yards north of that large oil derrick/platform on the far west end.

Robert Haynes 04-19-2017 09:03 PM

Some insurance policies cover the lower unit which would include a bent shaft, I know mine does but it may have been an added option I chose.
