need heavy duty torque wrench

Not sure where to post this so thought I'd try here. I'm getting ready to install a weight distributing hitch on my travel trailer and I need to use a heavy duty torque wrench to install the clamps on the trailer tongue. It needs to measure up to 380 ft. lbs. The one I have goes up to 250 ft. lbs. so it's not big enough. I called some rental stores here in Lafayette with no luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wow..... are you sure it is 380 ft lbs? And not 380 in. lbs.

380 Ft lbs is very very high.

I don't remember..... but putting that much torque on a bolt may require a special grade of bolt.

What size are the bolts?

Bolts that need to be torqued to 380 ft. lbs. are 3/4"

can't seem to find a place to rent in the Lafayette area. I can buy it at the Northern store, but they don't rent and since I only need it for a short period of time, it doesn't make sense to buy one.

Anyone know where I can rent one?

I thought the 380 ft. lbs. was a little high also. Checked my chart, but if you have 3/4 - 10 grade 8 bolts, it does call for 380 ft. lbs. (DRY). Torque for (LUBED) threads on that bolt drops down to 280 ft. lbs. Never seize or a Molycoat paste.

My torque wrench goes up to 250 ft. lbs. Not sure what you mean about "lubed", but are you saying that if I put some kind of "lube" on it, I can drop down to 280 ft. lbs. which I think I could do by "overtorquing" with a cheater bar and my present wrench?

Have you tried an Auto Parts store. Many Have loaner tools. If not get that some***** tight as possible and call it a day, QC aint going to be running behind you to check it out.

What it means by "DRY" is dry clean threads, noil oil or lube added. "LUBED" would be the threads lubed up with Never Seize or Molycoat paste.

Thanks to all for the info. I just spoke with the manufacture tech support group. They said "the 380 ft. lbs. is critical" and advised not to lube. They suggested checking with a mechanic shop which I will do. I will also try an auto parts place to see if they rent these.

Thanks, but I was fortunate enough to find a truck shop that works on 18 wheelers and the owner graciously agreed to torque the two bolts for me and wouldn't accept any payment.

Wish I had an 18 wheeler so I could throw some work his way.

Great to hear that there are still some good ole boys around. Not too surprised though. We southerners take pretty good care of each other for the most part without trying to make a buck on each other.
