An interesting share from Oilfield Camo

The guys from Oilfield Camo posted this interesting picture on facebook of a Scaup they killed during a hunt. They were looking for input on what this was and was able to get some answers. The bird had this green disk through the nose and also a leg band. They called in the band but were unable to get any info on the green thing.

Turns out it is called a nasal disk. What it does is alow ducks taking part in biological studies to be easily identified and observed from a distance without being recaptured. It is slipped through the nose holes and does not cause physical pain to the bird, though I imagine it would be a little uncomfotable and annoying lol. Below is a link to a delta waterfowl story explaining the discs...

I had never seen one of these before and wanted to share. Thanks for sharing this Oilfield camo. By the way those of you that dont know what Oilfield Camo is, they are a camo company that sells a very unique camo clothing and hunting equipment that is made up from designs of oilfield equipment all mixed together. Their goal is to help support and raise awareness for the oil industry and the importance it has economically for louisiana and the nation. And they are located here in southwest louisiana.
Keep Drilling!

I killed a Gray Duck with what looked like a resistor in it's nose.
The LDWF said they had no idea what it was.

I dont suppose LDWF gets involved with sticking things in ducks' noses. I guess its mostly Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. You have a picture of that Ray?

I have the thingy that was in the ducks nose.
I will go look for it when I get home.

We killed a mallard hen about 10yrs ago that had one kinda like that but it was a green triangle on one side and a green Y on the other. Bird Banding Lab said they use them to identify hens returning to the same nesting areas without having to recapture them.
