duncan/parish line canal fishing?

After coming back from la place recently I got interested in bringing the boat out to duncan canal / west lake P area... but my google searching left me a little confused.

First, I found this post on another board about it being dangerous to run through the canal in boats:

Is this accurate?

Also, is fishing under the interstate and the waters between the interstate and the lake generally productive? It looks like it would hold fish, but I never see any boats out there and from looking while in the car and on google maps, it looks like some areas would be incredibly shallow and also filled with many stumps.

It would be nice if the area was good fishing though as its so close from to launching from by the casino.
