best Reef anchor?
 

Ok fellas, what is the best reef anchor you have used? i am looking at something like this and want to make sure it will work. its gotta hold a 21' boat full of beered up fishermen...

any suggestions?

That's what I have. It holds my 24ft boat.

My buddy had one like that and threw it away because it was a waste of space. Get a metal one with the two sharp points. The main piece that you tie to swivels up and down so it can grab very well .....come to Academy....ill sell you one! LOL!

Academy dude, you mean like the one below? TheY dont hold on a reef in heavy current. if its a different one, post a SKU so i can look it up.

Like "W" posted, claw anchor is where it's at! The 11 pounder will hold a 21' boat anywhere you want.

Jerry's marine in sulphur. Not sure what size boat you have, but mine is 24' and the anchor for 21' and down is what I have and I works great!

It goes from 4.5# for 18', to next size being 11# for 23'

Seems like a pretty big jump between the 2. I have an 18' Kenner right now but feel like I should get the 11' pound and I can keep it forever no matter what the boat is.

Hell now I can't remember... I thought there was one larger than that..

I looked at the link, 11# is what I have. It works great for my boat and dry hull weight is 2500#'s.

Does it hold on an oyster reef with some wave action or strong current?

Yes it does,

I have had many anchors, this is by far the best I have ever had. It holds in almost any bottom.

I wanted to post pics of my breakaway anchor setup. It works very well and reduces the possibility of the chain become entangled in the flukes preventing them from swinging and setting. I rigged another today and took some pics.
Instead of running chain the length of the anchor, I use a piece of stainless steel cable. The loop at the end attached to the chain is small. The loop at the base of the anchor is large and allows free movement of the flukes. Two zip ties keep the cable from getting caught on the flukes as they swing.
Three zip ties at the top seem more than sufficient and are actually very hard to break loose when you need to but I have had two zip ties break on me. I also have a small shackle I can run through the end when I am anchoring in a dangerous area and don’t want to rely on the zip ties (like the fireworks show this week). I took the pics before safety wiring my shackles but rest assured they are secure now.
I also have some rubber end caps to be 5200’d to the ends of the bar at the base of the flukes. These ends seem to be magically attracted to gel coat. The rubber caps have saved me quite a bit of damage. Available in the hardware department of Home Depot and last quite a long time.

Thanks for the rigging idea jchief. do you see an issue with chaining from back to front and secure with wire ties? Or will that be too much weight and flip the anchor?
