Start of the 2nd split

Who has been out to the marsh or fields since the end of the split? Looking forward to seeing the Arial survey on Friday.

I will be in the marsh tomorrow and post what I see west of 27.

specksNdaSURF 12-12-2017 04:36 PM

Hearing mixed reports from marsh to central LA. Gwt Pintail and geese numbers up but not much else. Not sure where the birds are. I have a feeling the survey will not be too encouraging.

West of 27 looked much better today than at the end of the first split. It wasn't the most I have seen by a long shot but a big improvement.

I disagree he?s normally pretty accurate with at least where the concentrations of birds are located and basically confirmed what I?ve already been hearing. Not saying the 2nd split won?t be good just that it?s a lot less than expected given the recent weather conditions we?ve gotten down here.

3 of us hunted Pecan Island - 14 bw teal, 1 grey, 1 spoon.

Other blind with 2 hunters - 9 teal

Bluechip 12-16-2017 01:10 PM

Tough hunting for me today in JB. Very few ducks flying. Managed 3 ducks and hunted until 10am.

1 teal, 1 grey, 1 scaup. Tomorrow is another day.

ckinchen 12-16-2017 01:32 PM

Yeah if was tough today

Quackhead62 12-17-2017 06:43 PM

Hunted the lease out of the Boston both days one blind killed ten ducks both mornings consisting of Grays and a few mallards and teal. The other blind killed a few less but mostly shot teal. Ducks worked a little better than the first split and saw more but still not as many birds as last season.

Very slow 2nd split opening in Johnson Bayou. I did talk to some guys that killed limits west of 27 but not many. We had significant birds holding on Wednesday of last week then Friday when I came to put the decoys out there was a very noticeable decrease in our birds.

60 ducks in the first 3 days of the season. Not bad. Better than the first split. Bell city.

Black Jacks are ring neck ducks. You can kill 6 of them. Dos Gris are scaup. You can only kill 3 of those. We have a bumper crop of them this year. Also, black jacks will eat better than dos gris.

Top Dawg 12-27-2017 11:49 AM

Blackjack is what most ppl call ringneck ducks. Other names for scaup are DOS gris, bluebill. Ringnecks have a black back. Scaup have more gray on their back.

Hunt my lease SW Kaplan...2 of us shot 12.

2 pins...Could shot 10 but would of been happy with the past two per man limit
2 spoons
8 teal

Could of shot black jack by the dozens.. lol

Normally on a day like today we shoot nothing but big ducks. However, I did see more ducks moving North- South and visa versa today. Why the hell did they drop the limit from 2 to 1 pins this year. Freaking pisses me off.

Still not many good reports coming from PI marshes ..... I dont get it:confused:.. coldest couple wks of weather I can remember in years yet still no big push to speak of in the marsh. Now there are areas in central LA rice fields that are holding numbers but still below average for the most part. Hoping I get to make a few more hunts up that way.

Hunted my lease yesterday for the first time since opening weekend. We didn’t see much by 8:30 so we packed up and headed to my cousin’s lease between GC and Cameron. Pulled up to hundreds of birds. Ended with 17. A mix of teal, grey, spoonies, and one ringneck.

Josh C 12-28-2017 02:40 PM

Hunted my place in Marksville by the red river. 1 spoon and 1 gray. Saw maybe 100 ducks all morning! Something has to give. Lake is covered in grass, water depth is right, just no ducks.

All the birds are in the Whiteville area stacked up just to the south of you.

I used to shoot ring necks at one of our blinds back when I chased birds. Fun birds to shoot. They can move that's for sure. They eat decent. I'll take a grilled breast from a poule doux(water chicken) over a ring neck though.

I'm glad you finally killed something.. You got your boat fixed?

It was nice to get back out there. I thought we would do good on my lease since it hadn?t been hunted all season and the weather was right. Didn?t see much in the sky at all. Talk about disappointing.

Finally got the boat back. The kill switch was bad and a coil had went out. Got it all fixed and another issue popped up. Some other part that Briggs had put a service bulletin out on that apparently fried the coil in the first place. I lucked out cause I had about 2 weeks left on the warranty!

How?s y?all season been going?
