Favorite steel shot

Well trying to get ready for the upcoming duck season, and started assessing my ammunition supply. Looks like I'll be needing some more. So, with my new shotgun, figured I might start looking into picking up something different than what I've used in the past. I was somewhat limited by the old A-5 I was using, but with my new 887, I'm free to choose. Still gonna stick to 2 3/4 or 3 inch though. I've just always had the personal belief that 3 1/2 is over kill for ducks.

So what is your favorite 2 3/4 or 3 for ducks and teal?

I use 3" #3 Estate. I used to shoot Kent but they went up in price a couple years ago

blackcloud is a beast. #4 for teal #2 for everything else.

#4 Remington sportsman or federal for teal season, #3 Blackcloud for big duck season. Started using the black cloud and kinda doubted it for a minute, until I made a few shots that really proved what its capable of. I would use it for teal season but have no need to, usually got em about 10-15yds in from of me in the decoys.
Guess its time to stock up bc teal season will be here before we know it!

the last few years they have been having a tax free ammo weekend in september. I usually buy a case then. It saves me about 10-15 dollars per case, which is kind of like getting a box of shells free.

3" #6 if you can find them

3" 1-1/4 #6 for teal season and early part of duck season since we shot a lot of teal the first few weeks. Later in the season, shooting more bigger ducks 3" 1-1/4" oz #4 or #3.

Whatever is cheapest. And last few years that has been rios. I find #4s an all around good shot. I duck and goose hunt with 4s. 2-3/4" or 3" doesn't really matter. Teal and timber huntjng I shoot low brass 7s.

I tried Federals last year and they were junk. Very dirty shells. Lots of unburned cold powder and carbon residue. Think ima try something different this year

I used to shoot a lot of Winchester xperts and they dirty but now I use kent 3" #2 and preferably use 1 3/8 oz and love them. I started to use rios too and haven't had any complaints. I'm gonna pick up some 2 3/4 #4 for teal season for cheaper than any other shell that's worth shooting. For the cost of those expensive shells you can shoot double the shells at the same price and get more out your money.

Rio has a new bismuth round this year. Anyone shoot any yet?

This is a great idea. It just so happens when teal season comes up everyone goes out and buys ammo last minute, sometimes I have a hard time finding the exact shells I want.

Estate. Had better luck with them than Remington and Federal.

jldsc 06-24-2013 10:31 AM

my vote is estate or kents cause they cheap...dont waste your money on all the "new best thing since sliced bread shells" spend your money on a quality choke and them cheap azz shells will perform just as good.

Whatever fits in that Beretta!!!!! :smokin: Never had a problem with cheap or free shells. If they burn dirty I have a rag and some oil to clean my gun with. Attached is the weapon that really makes my hunt much better. Good ol black hound. Oh, and a patternmaster choke makes those "cheap and free shells" crunch a few more birds if you put it on them like I do haha.

We stopped shooting the estates. In our group 6-guys, we have had the brass break off the hull. Leaving the hull still in the gun. A couple times were not able to get hull out until back at the camp. Year before last and last year. Kent and rios starting last year, no problems.
