Prop for new tohatsu
 

Well fellas i had enough and sold my 40 omc, and am upgrading to a brand new 40 tohatsu 4 stroke. Talked to a few dealers and they want $300+ for a powertech stainless prop, im thinking i can get one either locally or online for cheaper, i just dont know what type, size, and pitch to get. My old motor was flush mounted and plan to do the same on the new motor, but if its advantageous i have a cmc power plate i can put on, so id need to get the appropriate prop.

Boat is a 16x48 1994 alweld semi v, the semi v continues all the way to the transom. Got 20" sides and transom, boat has bench in back and a fishing deck in the front the rest is open. I have two batteries and a 12 gal gas tank all in the back behind the bench.

Im getting a brand new tiller tohatsu 40 four stroke long shaft with electric start and power trim.

Any insight would be appreciated

Are you running a jackplate? Would a jackplate do me any good since im not a flat bottom?

Yes sir. I run a 6" jackplate. It will allow you to run the Motorola shallower. Without a jackplate I would probably have to run a 15 pitch to get my rpms up.

The SCB 3 which I am partial to is 292.00 at Nettle props online. The black stainless at Lake Area Marine is about 470.00.

From what the internets say the scb3 is a knock off of the yamaha black, but with thicker blades and runs 1-2mph slower. If thats the only difference ill settle for a mile an hr or two for $200. Maybe somebody else has other insight on the differences.

Do i even want to run the scb3/yama black? Pt also has the reb and the srd that look like it might work.

I can't speak for the REB. I tried the SRD and didn't care for it. CajunChristian likes the SRD but he runs a completely different hull than me. The SCB is a semi clever and has a lot of stern lift. Corners really well with a good top end. For me, I would go SCB, but every hull is different plus everyone has their own opinion.

Everything i read talks about flat boats, i know the v isnt much in them alwelds but will the semi v affect prop choice? And is it worth jacking up?

My express is built very similar to the alweld. In my personal opinion, it's almost always worth jacking up. That does change with prop selection. With the SCB or the Yamaha prop, you can run your cavitation plate 1-1.5" above the bottom of boat. Less motor in the water, less drag, better performance.

Not a prop question, but does anyone know how to take the restrictor plate out? Blacks doesnt do it, he said he doesnt mind if i do it but he as the dealer wont. I know lam does it but im not driving over two hrs for that. Google only has info on the tldi not the four stroke. Anybody ever done it themselves? Might have to just wait till i actual have the motor to fool around with it.
