Old Steam Engine History

This question came up the other day, no one knew the answer so I figured someone on here might know. Where did the old steam engine come from at the washout on the west side of Big Lake? I know there was a civil war battle around Monkey Island and one of the yankee gunboat's steam engines was damaged, I wonder if that is it?

Not a clue Pat but I sure hope someone can answer this for you so I can learn it also. I've often wondered the same thing, just never thought to ask.

As far as I know the steam engine is whats left of an old dredge.

"W" 07-28-2011 04:48 AM

Yea that's what I've been told or heard about steam engine....and it was just to big to remove at the time

Gottogo49 07-28-2011 05:54 AM

Buddy can give the details, it's not a steam engine, it's a diesel engine from an old tugboat. The whole story as in the Am Press a while back.

Mr. Block died a couple of years ago. He wrote some fantastic books about the Sabine/Cameron areas.

I have been reading some of the stories from this website lately. I find it very interesting. Read the ones about Skull Island, Pavell's Island, Jean Lafitte in SW La and the CSS Josiah Bell. They are really good. Also enjoyed the one about the Battle of Calcasieu Pass.

He was from Texas, but his family was from the Cameron and Sabine Pass areas. He did a lot of book signing and told stories about books he was going to write. Great guy. Great stories. He knew a lot about local history.
