I found this on their website about the red snapper season:

"The Commission may consider amending the season at a future meeting to weekends-only, if necessary."

Could be it...

They are closing red snapper season on July 8th and may reopen later

So are they saying we met the quota?

cajun_poboy 06-27-2018 09:25 AM

They are saying that from 5/21 - 6/10 we caught 38% of our quota and if that rate continues then by 7/8 we would be at or close to 100% of our quota.

They are 2 weeks behind on data so they are closing as a preventative measure. Pretty much bs, but you gotta play the game to get state management.

Just saw they have another meeting scheduled for July 3rd... guess that's enough time to tally everything up? Hopefully good news

Listened in to the meeting this morning...

Sounds like they are going back to 3 day weekends starting on July 13th for red snapper. They are trying to get the season to extend to labor day weekend like last year. The last 2 weeks of reported catches were 3% and 1% of the overall quota which appeared to help.

I also heard them mention potentially lowering limits on cobia and mangrove snapper based on problems in other gulf states... they mentioned Texas and Florida specifically. This came out of the Gulf Council meeting.

They specifically mentioned potentially changing the limit for cobia to 1 per person and 2 per vessel. There were no specific mentions of changes to limits on mangroves.
