I learned from fishing the bay for 30 years to not even bother with fishing too far north until July. Every few years you can get an earlier start But it's all dependent on the atchafalaya River. You can get some good trips as early as May, but that is along the beaches outside of the pass.

There's been a lot of misconception when it comes to vBay, and how it fishes during the spring and high water. All I can say is go out and explore, and you can find clean water and redfish...all in public water. Here are some pics from April 2019, which was another epic high river year. It pays to have a shallow draft quiet boat. I use a push pole to sneak up on them. Fishing definitely improves over the summer in the ponds, but you can still get on them in the spring no matter what the river is doing.

Yeah for redfish it's fine.

Well I ate my own words yesterday. I tried some of the marsh off VB. Water was bad in the bayous and canals, but nice and clean in the ponds. Little crabs were scattered, minnows and I saw a bunch of aquatic grass (perhaps too much)...usually all of the ingredients needed for success. We push poled probably 2 miles through the marsh, and only found two tailing redfish.

Going try another vb area soon.

well we didnt' kill them by any means, but we found some decent water and some tailing red fish. Should only get better back in the marsh.

BTW, some guy on Louisiana Troutman FB Page claims to have been killing the trout in VB, but who knows lol.

Sweet man, i can get pretty shallow with my flat. Ill have to go find some marsh soon!

Usually you can find redfish inside marsh island year round. Lots of area in there to try. I usually fish the drains where the clean water is. You will have to travel east of the river to find trout.
