Bermuda Tuna!!
I just got back from a trip to Bermuda, so I figured I'd share a few pics.
Bermuda was incredible in every way - beautiful beaches, turquoise water, friendly people, rich histroy and tradition, and good food. The entire island is also completely clean and pretty, despite being fairly densely populated...I have no idea how they do it, but there seems to be no poverty...just a very friendly, proud local population. And the fishing is amazing! I really didn't know how good it was, but I showed up right in the middle of a wide open tuna and wahoo bite that has been going on for several weeks. Next month is the start of marlin season, and there have been many grander marlin caught in Bermuda in the last few years...I had no idea. I fished one day with Capt. Kevin Winter on Playmate - what a great crew and nice boat. We anchored up on a high spot, and Kevin set out the kites, and after a slow first 30 minutes, the action turned on like crazy. We caught 5 or 6 nice yellowfin tuna within a 1 hour period. After that we picked away at the yellowfin for a few more hours, and caught some small almaco jacks and grouper on the bottom. It was a cool set up because we were anchored on a high point in 180' which enabled the bottom fishing, but the water quickly dropped off where our kites could reach the tuna in much deeper water. I was the only one on the charter, so I reeled in probably 7 of the 10 tuna we caught over 5 hours or so...that is definately the most I've ever personally cranked in. We trolled for wahoo, but nothing was happening so we called it a day early so I could go enjoy a rum drink or two before dinner. Caught these 4 within a few minutes of each other...didn't have time to put them on ice before the next rod went off: http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...Untitled-2.jpg Watching the kites...it was a lot of fun seeing the explosions: http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...Untitled-3.jpg Heading in and getting fish ready for cleaning: http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...Untitled-1.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...7/Untitled.jpg http://2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/im...ies/cheers.gif |

My phone never rang! You know how much I like to tuna fish.
Congrats, looks like you had a great trip! |
catching tuna under a kite is the shiznit!!! especialy if its a lil bumpy and the action of the boat makes that bait just flutter on top and go up about 4-5' in the air and they jump out of the water 5' to crush it

Hell of a trip. I may have to consider that as a new destination on my list.

Very nice tuna trip....capt....

Yep, the kite was really cool.
We were also chunking in a similar fashion to GOM tuna fishing, except we were anchored up. There aren't too many places to anchor when you're fishing a floater in GOM, but I guess you could drift with the kite. |
