The Big Burns ...aka The Miami Corporation

Does anyone have any information about the Big Burns permits for this year? When will they come on the market and is there a price increase?

Thanks!

Does any one actually check you? I know a few people who go back there often and never bought a permit and never got checked.

They say the worst time for them checking is early in year. Late in yr supposedly gets slack. I have buddies who have seen the game wardens in the surface drive boats checking everyone. I have never been checked.

I heard years ago that the locals were not kind to the vehicles at the landing. Is that not an issue anymore?

more policing might be the reason for the increase..

I was told the increase was to keep the riff raff out and they only allow so may permits now and it would be managed as a fishery as well. Heard it from a source. Not sure on validity.

Sure the game wardens were checking for permits and not just checking on what they were catching? If checking for permits, since when does a game warden have the right to check for permits on private lands?

The way it was explained to me was this:

The landowners/Miami do not want fishermen out there but they are required to make the waterways available for public access (via paid permit, in this case) as Miami uses state machinery and materials to maintain the waterways.

The increase from $40 to $75 this year is just another step in getting the price up to $300 per permit in the not-too-distant future.

I guess I understand their point of view, but it is such a great fishery and such a piece of hand-me-down local history that it will be a shame to no longer be able to sweat and fish out there.

I clearly remember going out there with my Grandpa and Dad as a very small kid (they still say I outfished them). I bring my wife and 12 year-old son out there.
So goes the way of the modern world....

Well since our tax dollars are paying for it shouldnt access be free?

T-Boo 03-15-2018 05:14 AM

I got a permit at Cajun Tackle.
They also had some at Boone?s Corner but they sold out yesterday. They said they should get more next week.
Chesson?s Grocery in Sweetlake still had some permits when I called yesterday.

The game wardens are hired by Miami to patrol the property

Also the permits are stickers on the boats and trailers. They can clearly see them when they drive up to you.

When you buy a permit, are the boundaries that you can fish laid out for you?

curious what all you can fish with a permit..south of the intracoastal and east of hwy 27 to the Mermentau??

I will look when I get home but I know it says that your permit does not grant you access to Rockefeller Refuge, and it gives you the Launch combination to the Superior Canal in Grand Chenier.
