Hybrid Duck - Greenwing Teal/Pintail

1 Attachment(s)
Has anyone seen a bird like this before? I shot him in Oklahoma this Sat on their second split opener. My Taxidermist, Gary Bell, confirmed it to be a hybrid and further stated it was only the second he had ever seen and it was def the biggest!!

Pretty excited to have shot this duck and it will look great next to a Hybrid Mallard/Pintail I have.

Looks like a teal to me

You are right! It is a Teal... crossbreed with a Pintail. Feel free to post a picture of another Teal that has the similar markings

And unless he has tiny hands like the guy on the Burger King commercial... That's a big teal

Haha, yeah the body on it was a lot bigger than any teal I've seen, especially a Green!

Where are you getting the pintail idea from? Did he have a sprigged tail feather or something? I cant see the pic good enough to tell anything besides the green wing head, and that it has a big body.

That's a blue winged teal.. Green wings are a smaller bird.

Nickt87, I get the pintail from comparing it to the numerous mature drake pintail we shot on same hunt. The feathers from the neck down match same pattern as pintail although he didn't have a sprig, just means the bird was in a juvenile stage.

The outfitters i hunted with in Oklahoma stated that they believed it was a mix of the two birds. They shoot 1000's of birds a yr so I trust them.

Finally, I brought to my taxidermist who has been in the business for 40 years and has mounted over 20K ducks. He stated it was a hybrid of the two birds.. Guess I just trust his professional opinion & compared it to the markings of both species.

Regardless of the real origin of the bird. I'd love for someone else to show a picture of a Greenwinged teal with similar facial markings.

I think it's a GWT/Old Squaw mix. Congratulations!
