Calcasieu Point Closing

December 15, Calcasieu point will be closing for repair work on the boat launch.
It is scheduled to re-open in late February or early March but with weather delays it will be like the Sale Road bridge work and we will be fortunate if the work is completed by the summer. Speaking of a boat launch that needs some repair work what about Prien Park. It is awful but with the 210 launch closed for Casino work, please don't start work on Prien Park until 210 is back in service.
See, I told you guys that Calcasieu Point was going to be closing. HaHa.

Cal pt closing is terrible news... even if its for a short period of time. There are no other launches on this side the lake for me to use. Heberts is in a horrible spot for ppl like me with a small boat.

jlincecum 11-25-2014 10:31 AM

thats not good news at all. A lot of people use that launch even in the off season

speckulator 11-25-2014 02:01 PM

that will be 3 major launches closed at one time probably just good timing is all

Terrible news

I guess it is good that the concrete [23,000 sq ft.] out in front of the ramp is going to be repaired. An there will be some light poles work and curbs reworked. The cost is only $ 582,000.

I say "guess" because I don't remember it being that bad.

Cal pt needs absolutely zero repairs! Theres nothing wrong with the place at all! maybe grade the gravel parking lot a lil?

Yep... thats why i dont see the reason for them closing for repairs.... maybe "upgrades" not repairs.

Clampy 11-26-2014 11:46 AM

I was just there and it is one of the best launches in the state.
I don't see much that needs repaired or fixed but I bet the things I want changed won't get touched.

BassYakR 11-26-2014 11:54 AM

What do you think needs to be changed Clint? Id say more parking for vehicles that do not have trailers. but thats not really that big of a deal.

MathGeek 11-26-2014 12:05 PM

Calcasieu Point is probably the finest boat launch I have ever seen. Too bad they need to close it for repairs. Hopefully someone will have the good sense not to allow all the boat launches on the E side N of Heberts to be closed at the same time.

For me, it probably just means I'm more likely to go to Grand Isle, Fourchon, or Leeville than make the trip to Lake Charles. People from Texas are more likely to hit Sabine or launch from the west side. Businesses in Calcasieu seem likely to lose business if multiple ramps remain closed for long.

is this a case of donated money and if you dont use it you lose it?

That would be good and I'd like some more bumpers for boat parking and maybe some more boat parking but really I'm splitting hairs.

I don't mind the closing, Its by far the nicest boat launch, and Id like to see it kept that way and not get run down, so Ill go to Prein and just fish my way down, then back up.

Would be nice to have a few more spots for boats to tie up as well NON trailered parking, hate it when peps park their trucks along the front of the first row, ya know where you get your boat ready to launch.............

BassYakR 12-03-2014 12:24 PM

Yeah theres no way i could launch at prien and go to Big Lake. lol thats a 40min ride for me. and id be out of gas. lol

well theres spicers? I don't like how spicers is set up though, the ramp is perpendicular to a narrow channel, more then once Ive had to load my old boat crabbing on to the trailer due to fast moving tide, Im damn sure not going to do that with my new boat.

never been to herberts, how is it? Ive been to the ferry ramp, but that's a haul too

BassYakR 12-03-2014 12:55 PM

Heberts isnt bad at all.... but i have a small boat and 90% of the time its too windy for me to launch there.

Much easier to use the ramp inside the boat stall area when the current is strong at Spicer's.
