Carrying a Rifle

Do any of you know what the penalty or fine is for having a rifle when bow hunting? I don't do this, but yesterday I saw a video clip of someone in Louisiana on their deer stand on opening day of bow season, with a crossbow, and a 30-30 rifle. The explanation for the rifle was in case of hogs. Maybe the guy thinks that's ok, but I doubt the law would see it that way. Anyway, I was just curious. I'm pretty sure the only legal firearm to carry while bow hunting is a .22 handgun with rat shot, for protection against snakes. Have a good one guys. Thanks in advance.

i think it would be ok as long as the deer isn't taken with the rifle which they would check for a bullet.

no its illegal to have anything bigger than 22 with ratshot while bowhunting.

LaAngler 10-15-2010 11:10 AM

it's only illegal if you get caught

This is correct

You have to notify DW&F before hand if you're hunting hogs out of regular gun season for deer. That goes for coyotes etc.

Anyone know what is the fine? Penalty? I figure it's fairly significant. I'd say at the very least a $100.00 fine, or hunting license suspension for a while, but I don't know.

This is not correct. The law has changed and you can now carry your handgun.

You better read again. You can only carry a .22 pistol with ratshot.

This is from page 8 of the Louisiana Regulation pamphlet you can get just about anywhere:

IT IS UNLAWFUL TO:
1. carry a gun including those powered by air or other means while hunting with bow and arrow during the special bow and arrow deer season EXCEPT, it is lawful to carry a .22 caliber rimfire pistol loaded with #12 shot (ratshot) only.

To clear the matter up...PDF from LDWF:

http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/sites/d..._Reg_Final.pdf

Page 8 does state only .22 w/ ratshot during bow and arrow season

The laws that changed are as follows:

CC permit holder, you're allowed to carry your gun at ANYTIME on the WMA. I don't understand why the open carry person should forfeit these rights?

Active and retired law
enforcement officers in compliance
with POST requirements, Federal
Law Enforcement Officers and holders
of Louisiana concealed handgun
permits or permit holders from a
reciprocal state, who are in compliance
with all other state and federal
firearms regulations, may possess
firearms on WMAs, provided these
firearms are not used for any hunting
purpose.
"

Any gun CAN be loaded in your vehicle b/c it is an extension of your home.

Thank you, Thank you very much. I don't need to read the pamphlet again because I keep up with the laws and I know this got changed AFTER the pamphlet went to print.

SULPHITE 10-19-2010 02:31 PM

right so if your not a CC then you can only have a 22 with rat shot...if you are a CC/law enforcement you can have a pistol correct...not a rifle...wouldn't consider a rifle a CC weapon??

The first question stated was about a rifle being carried for hogs during bow season...ILLEGAL

no rifle except in the truck, i'm not sure if the rule about being loaded at campsites and check stations is still valid or not.

i forgot to ask the ldwf agent about that, he did tell me I shouldn't worry about carrying on a WMA b/c they are safe. wow, really?

Not anybody can carry though so you shouldn't go around telling people they can carry when they may not be able to. That's the point I was making.

Also, I believe the law you're referring to is only pertaining to carrying a handgun on a WMA, I don't believe it has anything to do with whether you can carry it while bow hunting.

It was stated that it was illegal to have anything other than a .22 with rat shot. That is just not true.

You can carry any kind of gun you want if you're not bow hunting. But as soon as you grab a bow, you better not have anything bigger than a .22 with rat shot. I'm going to call and email LDWF to get the exact answer on this to put it to rest.
