Spicers Landing

For those that know anything about launching out of Spicers: I'm hearing it's a tricky place to launch out of. What's the scoop with that place? I was told of very shallow reefs around the bend on the way out.
I just want to avoid that kind of nonsense if possible and that's definitely the closest landing to my camper location... Until they open the Hackberry landing.
Thanks for your responses.

I heard they just opened the Hackberry public launch. But I haven't seen it.

To the "unknowing" you could run aground. When leaving the launch, go east to get to the ship channel.....but keep to the left. You will pass by some shrimp boat docks [on the left side of the bayou]. If you look to the right.....this is all very shallow water. The bayou circles this shallow area.

There's 2 launches at Spicer's. One is on the bayou the other is next to the highway where the boat slips are. The launch on the bayou can be tough if the tide is ripping through there. I always use the other one. They just started charging a $5 launch fee, and will give a nasty gram if you don't pay and tow your vehicle for repeat offenders. When in doubt about the bayou headed to the ship channel, just follow some one out. Also observe the no wake zones, some of dem Hackberry Coonasses don't play well with others. Good luck!

That's correct, but keep to the middle of the channel until you make the first bend to the left. There used to be some huge concrete blocks and other damaging structure just under the water  across from Spicer's until the first bend that if you hit could make you want to .

Sounds like I'd go somewhere else till they fixed it up.......especially with a new boat

It ain't getting fixed up. It's been like that forever.
The channel out of Hackberry is not shallow, but you have to stay off the edges.
Don't run on plane until you know the channel. Play it safe.
It runs along the road then makes a big U shape back to the South.
Stick close to the crab traps. Theys in deeper water. If you see the trap
sticking out the water, don't go there.
It ain't a bad channel once you know it.
I never launched there, but I ran in and out of there a lot before Rita. I had kin folk who lived in the lil camp by the bridge.

Public Launch

I used the Hackberry Public launch last Friday. The closed signs were still up but the launch was open. There were 7 boat trailers there when we came back. You can also use Dugas Landing in South Hackberry. I think they were $3 the last time I was there.
