Chevy Fuel PUump
 

Has anyone ever changed their own fuel pump in a 2003 Chevy Z-71? Got the V8. I think mine is going out and hear it is expensive to have done.

Do it your self it ain't hard i think it's 6 bolts that holds the bed on

Yea, I've heard it's not that bad to do yourself if you have someone to give you a hand to take the bed off.

Yeah, its not bad. All 6 bolts are underneath the bed, buy 2 cases of beer and get 4 or 5 of your friends and lift it off.(This is where you drink 1 case) I think it was 5 or 6 screws on top of tank, pop them out, d/c the wires. Install new pump,and re-install bed. (Drink other case). Taa-daa !!! Took me 3 hrs to do it myself with a tractor w/ a front-end loader and an impact wrench

Well if Jordan can do it in 3 hours by himself you should be able to do it in about 15-20 min :p

That's with consuming alcohol !!!! Boy, talk about a hangover

I did it the opposite way, drove till my tank was empty, stuck two hydraulic jacks under the gas tank, with a 2x6 board unbolted tank and lowered it, disconnected fuel hoses, changed fuel pump then, reinstall hoses and tank, took me an hour and a half. at least when you take off your truck bed you wont have to get under you vehicle and have dirt fall in your eyes and deal with the struggle of jacking up your fuel tank! My buddy has a dodge that he runs biodeisel in and he changes the fuel pump frequently, he just cut a door in the bed of his truck, so its a ez change.

Did it that way with on a Tahoe.......sucked

I also took the gas tank off. It is much easier that way. Cost a little over $300 for the pump. Be sure to run the tank about dry. If you have some way to get the truck off the ground it is a lot better. Took all of 30 minutes.

Not being a smart azz, but what symptoms make you think it's going out. Could be something else.

Oh, drop the tank, don't pull the bed. Make sure you clean top of tank well before removing the ring......don't want a bunch of dirt getting in thhere......drain it and clean out the debris that's in there.......

Truck hard to start. Have to turn key 3-4 times before she cranks up. Turns over but not starting. Guy at the oil change place said it may be fuel pump. Friend also had a suburban with the same issues recently and it was a fuel pump. Cost him over $1000 to get it fixed.

I would change the filter first. Just my opinion though. And it's a cheaper.

and check fuel pressure, see if you have fuel pressure after your truck has been sitting for a while. when you turn switch to on see if it increases if it doesn't its your fuel pump. if it has good pressure once you turn it on but then it falls after it sits for a while, it means gas is going back from your line into your tank, which is a faulty part on your fuel pump doesn't mean your pump needs to be changed. it can also mean that a fuel injector is bad, best way to find out is the computer that the dealer has it can check every thing every sensor reads for the last 10 drive cycles. after they read the computer info, they can make a pretty accurate diagnosis. I'm not talking about a cheap code reader cuz most of the time that doesn't help diagnosis crap!

mine is doing the same thing, for about a year now

i have a 2000 GMC Z71

i just havent had the extra cash to change it

i already changed the filter and that didnt help

these trucks have a sock on the fuel pump that could get clogged, it seems mine starts better after it has been sitting for a while which makes me think it could be that

2003 has filter at the pump, yes, some engineer redesigned it so you have to pull the tank so might as well change the pump to.

if you change pump replace the filter aka strainer, or it voids warranty.
