Cranking battery not charging

My cranking battery doesn't seem to be charging from my engine when I'm running. The batter is only about 4 months old. I put a charge on my battery Thursday and my tester said 100%....then went fishing Friday and put the tester on it again this morning and was down to 60%. It's been doing this for a little while now. I keep having to put a trickle charge on it at home. I have an '06 200 Yamaha VMax HPDI. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could there be an issue in the Perko switch not allowing the charge back to the battery?

Thanks....

Sounds like your charging system.....not the battery switch

Run it on the hose and see what the battery is reading.......should be around 14 volts I think

.....you reminded me of something else I forgot to add to my original post....I have a volt meter that is showing about 13.3v - 13.8v when I have the engine running.

....if it's the charging system do you know what that would entail me changing?

thanks

If it's reading anything over 12v it's charging. May just be a bad or dirty connection to the battery.

Did you connect the charger back up after you got home friday?

If not.....it sounds like you have a short somewhere that is draining you battery.

I had a stereo in my boat and found out that the friggin' memory on the stereo was draining my battery. I canned that sucker.

Check connections at battery. Also check bilge float switch

adamsfence 08-08-2010 01:24 PM

also check the connections i have seen were a corroded post or terminal will cause your battery not to charge correctly

Tete Dur 08-08-2010 04:13 PM

Thanks for the advice everyone...i'm going to tear apart connections this week after work to make sure there is no corrosion or bad connections.

one other thing i forgot to add is there may not be a short draining the battery when I am not using it becasuse since I have noticed the issue happening I have been disconnecting ALL of my positive wires as soon as I get off the water from a trip....I also took the boat out today and payed close attention to my volt gauge and there were times when I was only running at 12.4v and the most I ever saw it today was at 13.8v at times.

13.8 is good 12.4 is not unless the battery was completly drained.......i feel for you i don't wish electrical problems on no one.

Had the same issue a while back with mine. Installed a 2 battery on off on selector kill switch and haven't had a problem since.
