Need Lead

I have just started making my own weights for fishing and for my duck decoys. Where are some good places to find lead for free or at least pretty cheap?

At a tire shop.......a few will give you everything they have, some won't.

ive heard you can get the old balancing weights from tire shops. But i dont know if thats true or not

i have called a few local tire shops but they all told me no, maybe i would do better going by in person

Way too easy for them to say no on the phone.....go see them and have a good strong bucket to put the weights in.

A couple of "gallons" of weights.....is heavy. A card board box won't work.

first off tire balancing weights aren't good for duck decoys. fishing weights should be fine. but that lead has something added(or missing) that doesnt allow it to flex like decoy weights. when you bend em they break. we made a ton of em and found that out the hard way. they will work but untangling the mess is a big aggravation.

i dont need them to bend, i am rigging my decoys texas rig style and i am making bank sinkers for them

Texas style? Is that where all of the decoys face East so they can watch all the ducks fly by.... :)

Scrap yard.........Tire weights are a pain in the ***.
The scrap yards or should I say larger scrap yards will take tire weights & melt them down into 50lb blocks, no digging out all the steel clips & seperating the impurities. They are pure 50lb blocks of lead.

rambler 08-26-2010 08:56 AM

i got some

i've got a couple of cast net's worth of them...you can have em all...

my bad...i just saw where you are from...i'm sure you'll find plenty without driving all the way to my side of the state...

best decoy weights are get the little party glasses the plastic ones, get you a bunch of wire and a bag of quick krete. cut your wire in short pieces and make a u. then dip the cups in mixed concrete put in wire to make a loop to tie the rope on and let dry you can make a ton of them with a bag of concrete and its fast and easy

I got about 50 lbs of lead shot you can have. Bout to throw it all away.
