thru hull VS transducer mount
 

Broke my transducer and about to order a new one, which one do i want? The thru hull looks easy to mount, just hole saw a hole and mount to hull but looks like you lose your water temp, on the other hand I can just pull the wire back to the transom and mount there again but take the chance of breaking again like the first one. Any perks one way or the other? :confused:

I don't like thru hulls......hard to get to, and if you have a foam filled or double Hull, they don't work good at all......aluminum or glass Hull?? Besides, when its transom mounted, its usually just the bracket that breaks

glass hull, and it was the plastic where the groves are that allow you to set the angle(thats where it broke)

Hull mountnwork best when right below the center console. You don't have the
engine noise on the screen like the transom mount. You can mount the one
that goes thru the hull and still have temp., but that wouldn't be good for a
boat that might hit bottom or a reef at 30 mph like I did.
My big boat has the one that is mounted on on the bottom, thru the hull.
I like the transom mount cause it can pop up if you hit something.

I didn't notice the hole saw part......I'd NEVER do That!!

I was thinking the Hull mount with no drilling.....it'll read thru the glass, just not as well......

The ones that read thru the glass work fine. Just have to be mounted with no
air bubbles in the sealant. I would use something like 3M 5200. Push down and
twist at the same time so you won't have air bubbles.
Only thing is once the 5200 is cured, it ain't coming off, so make sure it is where
you want it.

Yes. It can.
It's called an "In Hull" transducer.

Glue it in your rear bilge. I would not use 5200 as if you get an air bubble and need to reset it you are out of a transducer. Go with 4200 or 4000. Also, wipe down the area with alcohol and sandpaper to get a good bond.

You can remove 5200, it's just a pain in the arze.

Or get it professionally installed and let them worry about the air issue.

I installed my last two transducers thru hull type. It's really called shoot-thru style. Be sure and clean the surface real good. I used RTV 3145 on both transducers and didn't have a problem.
