Sounds like a power pack issue.

Carbs or injection?

southern151 10-24-2010 02:50 PM

Fuel pump manual or electric?

go fish 10-24-2010 02:54 PM

manual start. the carbs are good. the motor runs fine when im going but if i kill it and try to start it up again it dont want to start. i have to wait a lil bit and then it'll start n run fine again. almost seems like it gets heated and then has to cool down to start it back up. i am not sure jus thinking over here.

Why I was asking about fuel delivery. Sounds almost like a vapor lock. Don't quote me but I've seen it do that in cars before and I know it's not a car but sounds similar in symptoms.

How about more info about the engine.
Brand, HP, carbed, permanent tank/6 gal. tank... ect.
Lot of time when the power pack goes out, one or more cylinders won't fire, or it won't start at all.
This sounds like fuel to me.
Could also be a flooding issue, if it is carbed.
If it is the newer electronic fuel injected and electronic ignition, it will be tough to figure out without a computer hooked up to it.

Running a yamaha 150 carbed that does the same thing. I believe it is getting flooded when try g to start since the choke is easily engaged when turning the key over.

it is a 1988 30hp evinrude. the power pack, spark plugs, and coil pack on it are all new. what do you mean by carbed??

Ray 10-24-2010 05:48 PM

Carburator, not fuel injected.

go fish 10-24-2010 07:43 PM

o, well no its not fuel injected then. could this be a problem cause of a bad water pump?

Not likely. I'd almost bet that it's fuel related. Either flooding or starvation.

Woodduck Commander 10-25-2010 12:02 AM

floats may be getting stuck? just a guess...

Dink 10-25-2010 08:19 AM

When it happens next time, pull a plug out to see if its wet......I'd bet its soaked

go fish 10-25-2010 08:45 AM

soaked with what? gas?

Montauk17 10-25-2010 10:02 AM

It can be several things, without a mechanic looking at it its a guess. Sounds like carb or fuel pump problems.
