Sure, I have used them in Grand Isle Surf fishing, fish them like a spinnerbait. Use the one's with treble hook.

In grand isle surf Fishin.......Mr. champ!!!

BLUE 11-04-2010 10:52 AM

Ok thanks ! Now what about deep water applications ?

Opinions_Vary 11-04-2010 11:02 AM

I'm sure they'd work, you might have to use a heavier spoon. I would probably jig it at different depths, but I'm sure they'll hit it. Spoons work on anything that eats fish!

The only experience I have with spoons are these:

We'd used them for stripers on lake Texoma. Haven't done a whole lots of spoon fishing here as I really don't know how to fish a regular spoon

Mr champ comes in 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz.....you should be able to get deep with it

Spoons would be good for jigging the deep edges of the ship channel!

What name brand are those ?

X2 on Mr. Champ. Use the Sidewinder also.

I've used them in the surf and also dragged them on the bottom in bayous and deep pits along LA 1 around the Grand isle area. Deadly when its cold and reeled in slow. You'll catch trout, reds and flounder on them. Gold is best in the marsh, but silver has better success in the surf IMO. Only problem w/ them in the surf are the bluefish and smacks (Spanish mackeral) because they like that flash. They'll bite right through mono or a leader that's not steel.

the ones we used were the chrome color with a little yellow bucktail skirt on the treble, just throw it out and give it a twitch twitch type retrieve.

Bomber. They make a really good flutter motion, come in a various assortment of colors and weights. Chrome and chrome/black as well as chartreuse worked best on the lake, the lighter baits have more action. You'll feel the flutter when you work it, more of a jerk type retrieve.

Jedi Lure Tricks 11-04-2010 07:26 PM

we carry those bombers at the shop. they look good but i havent used them.

deepwater jiggin is usually best accomplished by using a purpose built jiggin spoon. these are almost always flat with a single 'j' hook or lone treble hook and traditionally have a hammered or painted finish and are made to resemble dying shad/baitfish. these spoons are preferred for deep water because of their rapid descent and eratic action. 15+ feet usually calls for a jiggin style spoon, while any shallower water can usually be effectivly covered by a traditional surf spoon or casting spoon.
honestly, surf spoons and casting spoons fail miserably at most deep water applications.
jiggin spoons are for vertical presentations and casting/surf spoons are for horizontal retrieves.
my favorite for trout is a gold 1/4oz. sprite. once the red plastic tag wears off, i throw it away and pull out a new spoon. ;)
