Yamaha 50hp not pumping Water
 

2006 Yamaha Four Stroke 50hp
I ran my boat after coming back from crabbing and it was peeing fine. When I went to kill the engine, I heard the alarm and noticed that it wasn't peeing as if it should. It was a little weak and kind of spurting. I killed the engine for a while and made sure my muffs were seated well. I started the engine again and it never pee'd any water.

Tonight I dropped the lower unit thinking my impeller had broke. It was still intact and looked brand new. I went ahead and changed it anyway. I hooked the hose to the flush tube and ran the water without the lower unit attached. The water was coming out of the pee hole and coming down out of the where the impeller pumps water.

I scratched my head trying to think what the problem could be. If the water ran from the flush tube through the block and down the foot, it seems that there is no blockage??? I reattached the lower unit, cranked her up and still nothing??????

Any thoughts or tips???

Check your thermostat, had that problem with mine and found that the thermostat was corroded and getting stuck.

Make sure you did not miss the water pickup tube while you were stabbing the lower unit back on to the mid section. If that is good,like longside said,check the thermostat.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I looked at my impeller again and I had knocked the key out when i put the impeller on. Luckily it fell into one of the small recessions on top of the lower unit. I put the key on and reinstalled the impeller. I also pulled my thermost and it looked fine. But, I put the cover back on w/o reinstalling it. I cranked the motor and she started pissing like a drunk man. I put the thermostat back in and she's still pissed.

I guess either the thermostat was stuck, or in the process, i flushed out something that was clogging her up??? I'm glad she's working, but I would sure liked to have put my finger on the problem. I think I'm going to go ahead and change the thermostat as a precaution since its a cheap part and so easy to change.

I change my thermostats every 3 years,mainly because of saltwater corrosion. You are doing the right thing chaging it now.
