Protecting home from flood
 

This came from a friend of my grandparents. Now thats how you get your house away from flood!:

"Our son Cole's inlaws have a camp/house about 25 miles north and east of us on Three Mile Lake. it's an area that is in danger of flooding now that the Corps of Engineers has diverted water through a spillway to alleviate the threat to Baton Rouge and New Orleans from the Mississippi. Thought you might like to see what precaution they went to to get it above flood stage! We all usually go out there for the Fourth of July and other events! I hope it works!"

now put some huge pontoons under it!

I have a camp out there also. Go just about every weekend. We haven't gotten any water yet, but they claim we will see some back water. I saw a couple of camps/houses they lifted. I heard it cost about $30,000 to lift one like that.

To me the ppl at 3 mile should only worry if a levee would burst, right? The only other water that flows into there is Courtableau and that would have to back WAY UP to get to 3 mile, i think

They got a guy around Breaux Bridge my sister teaches one of his kids. He built a 10' levee around his house.

The water would back up from Two-O-Clock and Darbonne and flood 3-Mile. We have a weir built to help from Two-O-Clock but if high enough it will go around it. The water was 8-10' deep there in '73.

My uncle did the same thing to his camp last week in Whiskey Bay.

I guess its not really possible to put some permanent stilts under it while it was up. That would be sweet.

Why wouldnt it be possible?

I guess we'll see what happens. Darbonne is starting to come up. Rose about 4-6" since Sunday i beleive. I know the water was under the A frames of the RR track Sunday and yesterday i think it was touching them.

It's possible. Just need to drill the holes, set and brace the pilings, then pour cement into the holes.

That set up don't look too secure, unless the water comes up real slow and don't wash the timbers away. I'd be sure to use some kinda cable and anchor system to keep it from washing away.

My grandmothers house was raised 14 feet and pilings magically appeared under it.......She prayed to the Piling Ferry of T-Caillou, when she woke up the next morning....POOF.... they were there.:D

If I remember correctly..... When the water is a little high.....You can drive by boat from I-10 going north from Henderson Swamp area and get up to US 190.

All the water on the west side of the Atchafalaya basin starts flowing "backwards" from the main river about 8 or 9 miles south of Butte La Rose.

Yeah I was thinkin pile driver, didnt think about diggin.

To pile drive them, you have to move the house, drive the pilings, then lift and move the house.
Can be done, but more trouble than it's worth and a lot of cost.
Neither is cheap.
