12 of us took a mothership trip to the islands. 4 of us opted to fish out of our own kayaks that we brought; the others shared skiffs provided by the mothership service. The first day we got out there a little late due to a bad weather delay. Lots of decent trout, reds, sharks, and other summertime species. I had a half day where i drifted over the grass flats and put together a nice stringer totally on topwater over 4 hours or so. If it wasn’t for the grass hang-ups on your topwater 2 out of every 3 cast it would have been much more I think. Light suspending baits where really affective on all other occasions (small mirrodines & mirrominnows). I have to admit I spent a good amount of time just paddling and looking at all the fish in the turtle grass; water was crystal clear!
Rage-tails and other weedless topwaters would be on my list to bring next time. Single hooks on topwater didn’t make too much difference.
Get out there if you ever have a chance. Its a very unique estuary for our state!
