carolina rig techniques

I never fish a carolina rig, I mostly do drop shot, I feel drop shot gives you a better hook set and keeps your bait where you want it, but sunday I was fishing and was using a carolina rig with a bead, weight, bead and swivel, then a flouro leader and #4 treble w/ live swimpz, I missed a lot of fish trying to figure out whats the best technique I tried keeping my line as tight as possible but when I felt the bite I couldn't ever get the hook set. any help with a better set up or technique would be appreciated, oh and I never fished with live bait til this weekend, I use to fishing for bass with a texas rigged plastic worm, or when I do fish for trout its usually with a jighead and saltwater assassins.

N if your fishin the hwy 11 use a drop shot , way less work re- rigging when u hang up on all the crap on the bottom, or use a sliding cork

Sliding cork makes it about as easy as it can get.
