1 Week in Grand Isle - Not so good

I just got back from GI after spending a week fishing pretty darn hard with 8 people & 2 boats.

We fished the rocks, reefs, islands, cuts, Elmer's, the beach and every where we could think of and it was disapointing. We fished live shrimp every day and tried artificial to no avail. The weather was nice and we had a couple of windy days but fishable.

We caught 6 or 7 specks and about 50 white trout and were happy to catch those. The kids had fun and that is what counts.

I am an average fisherman and have been to GI for the past 10 years on summer vacation and this is the worse I have done. Even last year with BP taking over the island, we struggled to find bait but we caught specks.

I read reports that the salt content was low and sure enough when we got there and I tasted the water, is was no was near as salty as usual.

That is the only thing besides my fishing ability that I think hurt us. I spoke to the clerk at the marina and asked for a report and she said 2 people caught their limit the day before and that was unusual and it had been slow.

I know there were limiting out off shore but I could not make it out there. When we were leaving I did see some trout being caught along the beach by the jetties but we were packed up already.

Overall we caught fish and still had fun. :)

Happy Fourth of July! :flagUS:

Thanks for the report. The guides we went with all said trout fishing is way off this year in the estuary. We had a plan D which worked, plan A-C which any other year would have resulted in a limit of trout all were terrible.

Plan D?...Go to the market and buy some fish?

Anyone I know who has been trout fishin in GI this year has had a very similar report to the above mentioned.

Agreed, the reports over in GI have not been good this year. We cheated and had guides with a plan D which was not the market but I like the way you think.

Wish the fishing would have been better, but if yall had fun, then it's all good.

Lol! Yeah, if my wife ever finds out how much the few fish I bring in cost, the market will be the only place I get to fish anymore!

Thanks for the report! I heard a similar report from Elmer's, a few specks and lots of white trout. I will have to show you how to work the ol' chicken on a chain...preferably from a kayak:smokin:

Coolhand was trying to score another type of fish in Alexandria and just like us, he struck out. Now he is choking not chunkin his chicken on a chain!:rotfl:

He should have come to GI instead of going to Yankee Country. Good food, friends and fishing. What else is there!!!!

Way too many boats around the island on weekends.
Boats with stupid drivers.
If you want to catch Trout, you have to get away from the island.
All the crazies stay close to Grand Isle and Grand Terre.

toodeep 07-05-2011 12:16 PM

caught 15 2 to 4 lb trou in front of elmers island about half way to fourchon in about 3 to 5 ft of water trolling down beach hitting green pockets on sunday morning.
