Hog Hunting

Got a good friend that is starting to have a hog problem and wants to start hunting them.
He owns the property and it's out in the middle of no where so dont have to worry about neighbors.
Anyone know the specifics on the new night hunting laws???

There is an article in this months Louisiana Sportsman about hog hunting and them being a nuisance. Maybe something in there.

night hunting for hogs only legal til Aug 30th, you can only use a .22 longrifle or magnum, or shot guns including 10gauge.

The legislature has passed and the governor has signed the bill (Act 95) eliminating the weapon restrictions for the nighttime shooting of outlaw quadrupeds, nutria and beaver. There is a requirement that they notify the local sheriff. This new law is effective August 15. After that date, there is no longer a need for persons to apply for a permit to use firearms greater than .22 or shotguns with buckshot. Also passed (Act 29) was a bill allowing use of sound suppressors for take of these animals, provided the person is authorized by ATF. The text of both Acts are attached.

after august 15 this year till august 30 all centerfire rifles, scopes, lights and sound suppressors are fair game. you still need written permission from the land owner if you lease the property. also its probably a good idea to notify the sheriff and wlf that you will be blasting at night so they dont come check you and mess up your hunt.

Is it October Yet 07-24-2011 01:09 PM

Make a few traps then you just walk up with a pistol and fire away. We used to get 10+ every few days at a lease we used to have in Avondale.

I'm in Florida for a few days at my family vacation house when we went through the gate last night there were groups of 4-5 hogs all over the golf course , went back with the golf cart to try n smoke one but couldn't find em

Last year we saw evidence where they passed thru his property maybe 2 times. his neighbor up the road was growing corn. No corn this year. My buddy cleared another `15 acres this past spring and left 5 pecan trees. They are plowing up the ground around the pecans.
He is going to put up a game camera and see if we can get a time frame and then i'll go up and put out some corn.

I got these pictures back in March, 5 minutes before I checked the camera.

This is in the Atchafalaya basin. During the Deer season, there was almost no sign of hogs. Then a month later the area was tore up with hog digging.

I second the trap if y'all are wanting to put a good dent in the population. I have seen up to 15 hogs in one big trapping pen before most of them were piglets. But the good thing about a trapping pen is they can go in but not out.

westforkarmory 07-26-2011 09:15 PM

you should get some nightvision

speck-chaser 07-26-2011 09:17 PM

westforkarmory 07-26-2011 09:18 PM

yea thermal scopes are great if you have the money for them

wtretrievers 07-26-2011 09:29 PM

Call the LDWF........they will give you the low down, they want them gone as bad as you do, they will even come out & shoot them at night with thermal scopes, my friend is the Vet at LDWF & he goes a good bit at night on Hog complaints.

Nothin will thin em out like dogs but if yall wanna have some fun set up a stand with corn about 15yards away.Get one of those pickin lights and wire in a dimmer switch, run cord to your stand with a car battery. When you hear hogs in the corn slowly dim the lights up.They wont notice and if your shootin a bow they dont even know whats goin on.One will run off and the rest keep eatin will you reload!
