Lower Unit Oil
 

Fixing to change my lower unit oil on my 03 merc 2stroke 75...What does everyone recommend as far as grade and brand...I dont need a comparison of who is right and who is wrong..I want someone that does their own maintenace...and best place to buy it around Lake Charles...tia...chris.:cool:

I have always used factory oil on mine, I buy the oil in a gallon container & get the pump for it, makes it easier & less mess. Pull your prop off while your there,inspect seal for fishing line & clean & grease prop splines.

Hey man I live around the corner and I have one of the pumps if you want to use it, they dont cost much but no need to buy one if you dont have to so just let me know.

I was told to use Mercury oil in your lower unit. I was using an synthetic and was told that an representative from one of the oil companies, Klotz I think, said that when the synthetic mixes with water it becomes corrosive. If anybody disagrees I'm just repeating what I was told.

Weedeater thanks bro, i might do that if i dont find one today while working is it quicksiler gear oil???? Never done it before always paid.

Quicksilver or mercury. It's very easy to do.

Gear oil is all the same for the most part. Some company's add synthetics in it,but I prefer the old school sticky oil. Really does not matter what brand you use,you can even use automotive gear oil. Just make sure it is a 85-90 wt oil.

You will probably need a "big" screw driver to take the oil drain plugs out. I filed down a piece of metal to fit tight to the grove in the plug.

The bottom plug probably has a magnet on the tip. Check it for metal particals.

and milky oil.

i use merc premium gear lube in all my motors and never had any problems. a mechanic told me it was the best years ago and ive been using it since and havent had any trouble.
