Prien 8/29/11
3 Attachment(s)
Made a short trip this morning from 9 to 12pm. Picked up 10 trout, 4 flounder and a red. Started with gulp and got tire of catching croakers and switched to hackberry in midnight and it was on. I bet I threw back 5 small ones for every legal trout to hit the ice chest. Lost some nice flounder before I could net them. Can anyone tell me whats the trick to a good hook set on a flounder? I am waiting a few seconds after the hit to set the hook but still not getting a good hook set. If I try at the hit it pulls.

I try to use a jighead with a longer shank when I might catch flounder. It gives me a better chance of getting them in the softer tissue of the mouth. I also tip the hook with a lil piece of shrimp. They tend to hold it longer. Good catch! May I ask what area you targeted for your catch. I didn't have as good of luck as you did. I tried the points and drop off near the channel.

The spec bite has been finecky (sp?) the last two times i went to prien. we managed 15 keeps and 10 keeps with a 3 to 1 ratio of throwbacks. no solid bites.... fish would play with the bait.

Same here but I been letting them take it for a second or 2 and then set the hook. I used that hesitation today and had my limit in an hour and a 1/2. Had to throw back at least 5 for every keeper. It was on today with the tide.

tide was HUGE for us too.... soon as they started biting i was flippin like i do bass. specs were biting 5 ft away from the boat.... ALL 10-11 inchers though. couple of 12's mixed in but yeah the ratio was around 5 to 1 that day.
