rockefeller refuge

Went run the Rock today. Fish were slow, only about 6 keeper specks, one throw back red fish, lots of small white trout, and some 11.99" specks. Caught a limit of shrimp in about 30 minutes at weirs on Union Canal. Father in law caught 4 dozen nice crabs while I cast netted for shrimp. Left the crabs biting to look for some more trout but it was a slow day for everyone we talked to out in the area today. Trying to post some pics but Crackberry Phone not cooperating. :shaking:

rockyville

I was there on Friday. Caught a limit at the Mudhole in about 30 minutes, but they were mixed. Went to LSU to catch some crabs and the guys there were catching much better shrimp.

Just curiious, where is the "Union canal"? Is that the Mudhole? Also, where did you catch the specks? Bertrand Canal?

thanks for the post.

Bertrand Canal for specks. as far as the canal name, on the LADWF website they have a map with all the canal names, that is where i got the name from. I'm not familiar with the area it may be known as something else also. Better get there early to launch, weekday and the line was long. You can't take off til official sunrise but you can be in the water near dock.

Thanks for the post. Where were you fishing in the Bertrand? Thinking about going this week and hoping to run across some reds and specks out there. Any other places you've heard of people maybe catching a few in that area???

castnetting shrimp on rockefeller refuge

Where is there to castnet shrimp on Rockefeller refuge by foot? I have a camp in Grand Chenier but havent been to the refuge since I was a kid. I will be there this wknd so any info would be greatly appreciated!

Mikeyg, that was my first time there by boat and we fished the North and South ends of Bertrand Canal. ChumStain @ Josephs harbor they had some people castnetting at the set of weirs by Josephs Harbor. I am not sure how good they did, I was running late to go pick up my kids so I didn't talk to them. I did however talk to one guy by the Hilcorp dock and in that little slip they had just caught 5 or 6 specks in an hour or so. Slow but you can fish off your tailgate.

If you're referring to the Iron gates, they would say to call "Rockefeller Lock" instead of the iron gates. Though they could call "the iron gates" I have no idea how good shrimp did run at Rockefella Lock since I saw there were few vehicles at the parking lot last Tuesday afternoon (around 1 PM) and yesterday around noon.

Shrimp did run pretty good at Concrete Weir, but took longer slightly up to 25 lb of shrimp. No compare to last 3 weeks to catch shrimp very quickly with few casts at LSU and Concrete Weir. Shrimp size at Concrete Weir were pretty nice with mixed yesterday than last Tuesday. There also was a lot of baby speckled trout/white trout at Concrete Weir. And few seagulls flew around the weir to look for trout food. It was fun to watch them.

not a bad day at all. thanks for the report.

Jrchip1 10-27-2011 08:32 PM

Shrimp size falling off, 35-60 with 3/4 on the smaller size. Still if you just want 25# no culling, +/- 30 minutes.
