Weird shrimp
1 Attachment(s)
This "shrimp" was caught in Rockerfeller this weekend. ID help needed . Prawn maybe. Not a tiger shrimp I don't think. Hopefully attachment works. Notice the larger carapace and front "claw-like" structures near it's tentacles.

In the 80's Rockefeller were raising some big shrimp, but they couldn't stand the cold water we have in the winter.

Rock Shrimp
Used to trawl a lot growing up and my step dad always called those " ROCK SHRIMP", not sure why but that's what he called them.
|
Rock Shrimp have a different look and a harder shell. Looks like it is armored.
|
Same animal
Montauk, your pic posted seems to be the exact same shrimp. What was the title of the picture that you sent. I'm presuming this is a Malaysian shrimp, correct??
|
Send a pic to one of the biologists out at Rockefeller. They might be interested in it.
If you catch anymore like that I will gladly come by and taste test them:grinpimp: |
Spoke to a secretarial person at Rockerfeller refuge about this weird shrimp. She said "yea, they are showing up more and more". I want a more scientific answer so I e-mailed the pic to the LDWF in Baton Rouge and hopefully will get more "appropriate" info

did ya eat it? |
As someone already said, that's a Malaysian freshwater prawn (Macobrachium rosenbergii) Tasty critter, but not supposed to be in these waters. Probably an escapee from a culture experiment.
|
From LSU fisheries agent:
looks like Macrobrachium rosenbergii, the Malaysian Prawn. There is also a native species known as the river shrimp, but not that big. Rockefeller did research on these for years.

Rare species known as the "whatamacallit" usually best served with Patron and lime over ice.

Reply from LDWF
Yes picture sent to LDWF in Baton Rouge confirms that it is a Malaysian shrimp. He did not however site any reasons at this time to be overly concerned. Hope this does not lead to something such as the Asian carp situation.
|
they aren't very cold tolerant so probably won't be a problem
