Big Lake Fishing
 

I already inquired about fishing with my son in big lake and I got great responses but instead took him to Weeks Bay where I know. Of course we didn't do that well and my kids say I can't catch fish. Sad but unfortunately true when they are with me. I got my maps in and want to take him to big lake tomorrow morning. I was thinking of launching under 210 loop. I saw a launch there on google maps. I never been because I don't know where to go. I heard fishing the drop off near prien is good. Just not sure but if I don't put my 10 year old on fish I may lose a fishing partner. Any help would be appreciated. But on a good note he did kill his first 8 point Tuesday!

Launch at calsasieu point, right when you are coming into turners there should be some flocks of birds working close to the ship channel early in the morning.

there are a number of areas that are producing around the 210 loop... thats a long haul to big lake by boat if you launch there. take asterisk advice if you are for sure wanting to go to BL. Turners is right outta there and there have been birds working mid lake in BL. The drop off along the ship channel in prien does hold fish. Sparkle beetle, glow chart jerk baits, popn cork with DOA or other skrimps are working also. some of the points are holding fish along the ship channel if you can beat the boats to it. good luck

Worse case take the young man to the weirs and load him up on redfish. He will sleep good on the way home. Lol.

I feel you pain. I think I'm going out of calc point with my 9 yr old. Last time he came fishing he said he just wanted to throw a cork out and let it sit, so I am going to get some live shrimp and let him do that.

I think Calcasieu point is closed for the winter. You can still launch but the store is closed. Check with spicers to see if they have live shrimp.

Right on, Jason! That's usually what i recommend to folks who are new to the lake and just wanna catch something. The weirs are a good spot to start for sure, they're almost always biting there!

Wiers? I'm assuming when looking at my map they are on the SE side of the lake about 8 miles from Turners. Also I said Big Lake but I used BL as a general area. That would include everything from Lake Charles to BL.

If you wanna keep it simple launch at 210 and i will try and PM you some general locations to fish.

you are correct. i'd say go there if you just wanna get bit and aren't picky about what you catch.

Trout have been thick in the channel drop off's around Prien and Lake Charles.
Me and Tightline11 have been loading up our ice chests every day we fished.
Been killing them on popping corks. That shut down, we been catching them
on lead heads and soft plastics today. Deep, jig slow. They don't fight too
hard since the water temps cooled off. Maybe a 200 yard trip by boat, load
the boat.

200 yd????.... you hittin my hole? Was catching good there last time, until the tide stopped moving.

If you are going to fish the wirers..... bring lots of hooks and weights [or jig heads]. If you fish on the bottom, you will loose lots of hooks. Bait shrimp will catch lots of fish if the water is moving.
