Youth shotgun, pump or auto???
I have a 10 and 12 yr old, looking for a shotgun, don't want to spend too much being it is a youth model that they will only use for a few years. What would you guys recommend??? Academy has some Mossbergs reasonably priced, pump or auto???? thanks

Get a pump no kid should have an auto imo ....

Pump, teach'em young
|
My first was a mossberg 410 pump and I still have it and its in damn good shape. I can't wait to pass it on to my lil girl once she's big enough.

there is a Rem 870 youth in the classifieds on West End Angler.com
|
pump will make them place well aimed shots instead of sky bustin...IMHO....

What's wrong with giving them one shell until they have safety and leading down? Less recoil with a gas auto may help them better on the future. Why do we shoot $1500 shotguns instead of an 870? They both kill birds. Academy had a Weatherby auto for $400. Not a big difference between that and the 870.

I would start them out with a pump. mine started out with the 870 rem youth model.

870 youth-great starter gun-
|
870 youth.

I would go with the pump hell i still shoot a rem pump cant go wrong

My kid, at 9 years old he is small, shot an 870 pump youth model at doves, only allowed one shell at a time, he killed 9 birds flying on his first ever hunt. Prior to shooting the gun, I threw away the factory chokes, got some Carlson's, (skeet, light mod, and improved mod). All he needed, he shot more than 30 birds last season. Great set up for a kid, choke tubes make a huge difference.

My first shotgun was a Remington 1100 auto but I was always a big kid.

I started with a crack barrel 20ga. lol
|
squirrel hunted with 20 gauge winchester auto. first loner duck gun was my uncles 12 gauge winchester pump. first auto 1187 special purpose. I was a little bigger and could handle it b/c that gun is a tank.
the winchester had that checkered look an the ejector...still remember that |
my son is 12 and shots a youth 870 and is pretty good with it. He said he wants to start shooting a 12, but he will have to wait until next year. I have a 870 ,12 pump for him next year.

I started out with a Stevens 4.10 double barrel at 5 , then moved to a 20 Stevens double at 8, then a Browning A-5 3in. At 11 never got more than one shell until the A-5! Even with my rifles, never got more than 1 round unless it was crippled on the ground or water! Those Stevens crack barrels were not easy on a kids shoulder, neitherr was rem 700 30-06, but my adrenaline pumped soo fast as a kid I never really noticed it!

thanks for all the input, bought the remington 870 from academy, 20 g, 269$$$
