SaltyCajun.com - Quick hit between the fronts

While at the marina yesterday evening I was approached by a guy that had brought his starcraft down from Michigan. He and his dad had tried to fish the area but soon found out this area is not a place you just go to and fish. They tried the nearby rigs and ducked back into the wagonweel without success. I agreed to take them out today for a few hours. I told them it would be limited due to the threatening weather and dense fog. It was well after 9:00 before we left the dock. The ride was slow and cautious because the fog never lifted. It opened a little but I was always watching it drift past.

Dad had redfish on his bucket list. He had a belt for over 10 years with a redfish on it but at almost 70 he never caught one. This was his first and that part of the bucket was filled.

I had put the boat in a spot that has been good to me before but today it was great. We were at an intersectipn of 2 pipelines and the edge of the bay. We could fish 3 points at the same time and caught fish off all 3 points. We never moved which was good because of the weather conditions. The box filled up fast and once we had a limit of reds all the rest had a repreeve. This one was just over 12 pounds and after a photo op he went back to breed. You can see the fog around us.

The bite was steady and they had a ball with the reds. We could watch the fish move the rozos and just cast to it and hang on. We also got a bunch of black drum and picked out 8 of them to sample our oil and batter. As we were about to leave this 11 pounder hit a gulp molting shrimp as soon as it hit the water. It does not look that big because it is a side shot of the fish. It also went back.

It was about 1:00 and they were ready to head in very satisfied. We had to buck the fog all the way back. There were not many boats out today so it helped me while running. After the fish were cleaned they took a batch of redfish fillets up to the restaurant to have cooked for them.

With pleasant memories and a full belly they will have stories to tell when they get back home.
