Lacassine do's and dont's

As its looking like there may be enough water to fish this year, what are some suggestions for someone who has never been in there before ?

Not looking for specific "honey holes" or anything like that, just more along the lines of where to run and where to stay away from...

Thanks,
Hydro

Don't cross any shallow flats to get to what looks like a better fishing area. If you are like me and weewacker you'll regret it

Best thing to do is go a few times with someone who is familiar with the area and if your running and find yourself in shallow water don't get nervous hammer on it and don't break plane till you find a canal or deeper pond it's not as bad as you think I looked at the pool yesterday and it is still low but coming up

Make sure you have a good strong trolling motor that has a good smooth blade on it. You want to be able to chop through vegetation good. Any burs on the blade and it likes to grab it and wrap up, and you will be spending time cleaning your prop.

Also, slow down when you are making the turns on the main canal. Not sure if it is still the case but some of those turns are blinded by tall grass and you never know when there is a boat coming from the other way. I just slow down around turns to prevent any collisions.

And obey the no wake signs in the canals. Everytime I go I feel like I'm the only person that slows down for em. They are there for a reason. Like LCD said.

Make yourself an anchor out of a rod afew feet long. Workes really well. Also sometimes it is better to start on the up wind side of a flat and just drift with the wind. Trolling motor scares alot of fish.

If you have never been go with someone else first. If not you better stay in the main canals. Lots of shallow flats. Stay away from it on opening day.

Bluechip 03-09-2012 05:44 PM

I encourage people to go on opening day. Just stay in the canals and watch all the other boats, where they run their big motors and where they are push poling and you will learn the do's and dont's very fast.

Let me know if you want company one day, I have been sevral times although I don't promise we will catch I do know a few spots to hit..... and that's for anyone that has an opening in their boat.
