Anyone ever fish Sabine reserve?
 

I'll be going crabbing with my dad Saturday morning in the reserve and really wanna catch some fish to cook. I really don't care if it's reds, flounder, or trout, I like eating them all. I checked the tide and it's supposed to be coming in. I plan on fishing with gulp on a 1/8 oz jig head around all the cuts and the east spillway of the impoundment. Anyone have any advice?

I find trout heads are best [free and the catch the best] for catching crabs.

Chicken is usually a close second. I bring a 5 gallon bucket and put the crabs in it as I catch them.....I put any med or smaller crabs in another container. When I get about a dozen in the bucket, I count them as I put them in the ice chest. I then write down how many I put in the ice chest.

I see most people catching a crab an putting it in the ice chest. I bet they have no idea how many they have kept and all there ice is probably melted from opening the ice chest for each crab they caught.

Yea I can catch the crabs pretty easy out there. We cull similar to what you describe. It's the fish I have trouble catching

Are they catching many crabs now over there?

I had some friends bring a bunch of kids to either Hog Island or Nature trail and smoked some nice 18" to 20" reds on fresh shrimp.....

This was yesterday that they fished. Got there about 10am.

Dannyl, I went 3 weeks ago and caught some nice crabs in just a few hours

Should be able to catch some flounders and reds by the cuts. They have a cut on the north line canal going into private property it's pretty good if you can cast up in there sometimes. Before Rita we used to stroke the bass in the back. Haven't been since then.

I fished in northline one time after Rita and caught a red. That was it. We used to do good on bass in central canal on muscadine finesse worms and buzz baits. After Rita, but before Ike, we were doing real good in the impoundment. Once Ike hit it all silted in and the ponds were real shallow. Haven't been in the impoundment in a few years now. That place is completely different compared from when I was a kid until now

We have torn up the reds back there on spoons. Go back in unit E armed with your favorite artificial. I prefer the Johnson silver or golden sprite's. They are pretty weedless. There is a lot of grass, the water looks good and once you find the reds it is on! We ran into a school of them. My buddy caught them on a plastic worm and I caught them on a snagless sally that was tore up after the second fish.

You can also go to the second bridge and take a right. Go down that canal until it turns back to the left. The first or second cut on the left is where you want to be for some big reds. They stack in there sometimes. That water is muddier though, and you will probably have to live bait catch em. Live mullet is probably the best bait for them back there.

Take a right at trappers shak. Everything on the east side of that canal is E

trappers shack is no longer there. they were removed before the hurricanes

Thanks. I know exactly where your talking about. Never knew it was called unit e. I plan on fishing the cuts on the south side and west side of that unit. Guess I'll go try in the marsh too

Go north of where the trappers shack was to the weirs going into the inpoundment. If water is going into the pool reds or usually stack up there.

You might be ok after these hard south winds but its still shallow and silted, a good setup tunnel helps
