Bet ya have never tried this...

Here are some pics of spearing smelts, the smelt shack, the spears, and a video of me spearing one (hopefully the video loads). In the winter after the ice forms (4 inches or better) on the salt water inlets we set up shacks to spear shiny little darts known as smelts. They are totally awesome tasting and the most fun you can have with your pants on :grinpimp:. Hopefully, I will be able to load the pictures and video for you to see.

Cheers

food

you eat them shiners? fry that whole? don't guess they would be too easy to scale or filet

Yup, take a pair of scissors, cut the heads off, take the guts out....roll them in flour with salt and pepper, butter in the frying pan, and medium heat and fry till golden crispy. Little bit of white vinegar and voila...instant tasty :churn:

I'd try it

I love cajun but most likely I have never tried the real, downsouth cajun. We had a turkey (domesticated as we don't have wild turkeys) fry and injected the turkey with a cajun marinate and then rubbed the outside with a cajun rub. Best turkey I ever ate.

What to you catch with the bait in that bucket?

Top Dawg 05-17-2012 09:58 AM

During the summer we get ate up by those things. We call em banana fish down here. Lol

Actually, we do use them for sea run trout and striped bass in the spring. A lot of people freeze them for the spring runs.

Good for you brother....there are a lot of people who are afraid of the cold and won't give new foods a go.

Trying to wrap my head around the dipping in vinegar thing....Trust me, I'll eat anything once!:smokin: However, I just would never fry fish and say, let me get some vinegar....I don't know...I guess there is vinegar in ketchup so....It is pretty neat to sit in a ice house and fish in a hole though....Watched several shows where they use, what I call old school fish finders...They can see the bait with it and everything...I would likely get too drunk and fall in the hole!!!

Hahahahahaha....lot of people have had a few too many pops while there and had to call to get a drive home :help:. Next time you have french fries sprinkle some vinegar (cidar is the best) on them with some ketchup. Just a sprinkle is all you need, it's wicked on deep fried fish and batter :churn:.

A friend of mine, living in Syracuse, told me about smelt years back. I think he said people would snag 'em. I don't remember if he ate them or not. It looks like fun though.

Canadian Black Bears 05-17-2012 04:05 PM

Ronnie, it is a ton of fun...all my son's girlfriends over the years just loved going and to see them spearing those little darts gave me more enjoyment than it did them. I even had exchange students from Brazil and Columbia go with me this year and they had a blast and didn't even mind the cold...lol

RonnieF 05-17-2012 05:54 PM

With that much fun and action, i guess ya tend to forget about the cold. I've noticed that with duck hunting when it's actually gotten cold down here.
