Scum Line
 

I'm interested in hearing what some of you guys use to remove the scum line off off your fiberglass boat hull. Last trip to BL I noticed one had formed on my boat. The soap at the car wash didn't take it off. Any suggestions on what works best?

I just recently cleaned the green stain off my white fiberglass boat. I used Starbrite Instant Hull Cleaner. You just wipe it on and it in 5 seconds you will see it turn back white right before your eyes. Someone on here recommened it in another thread so I tried it and it works perfectly. I bought it at Academy and I think West Marine has it also.

I fish Florida often, those boys use liquid toilet bowl cleaner from the Dollar Store and swear by it... Their fresh water bayous are B L A C K and leave a nasty stain line...

Star Brite stuff works well also, Dollar Store stuff is .99c a bottle...

Been keeping simple green in a small pump sprayer. Works wonders. Of course you still have to use a brush.

Thanks. Heard about the toilet bowl cleaner stuff before. Wonder how it affects the gel coat? I will try that star brite.

Was told if you use the toilet bowl cleaner you need to apply wax. Don't know if true or not.

It's metals in the water that are attaching to the FG hull. I use a product from the dollar store that works well. It's in a spray bottle labeled "Awesome" .99 cents a bottle.
Spray it on, leave on 5-10 min, spray off. Realize all these type of products will remove every bit of wax you may have on the hull.

I use muriatic acid. Its in a gallon bottle called "The Must for Rust". I buy it at Double W off of Ridge Rd. It's about $10 for a gallon. I put it in a pump sprayer and stay it on and watch the scum line disappear instantly then spray it off with water. It says on the bottle it does not mess up the gel coat. Stop by there and talk to Chase or Charlie and they'll hook you up.

Be careful not to get it on the trailer, I usually place a tarp over the channels and do it in the grass, not on concrete.

I wash it religiously after each use. I always stop and wash it at Cormies plus I wash it when I get home. In fact most people that fish with me think I'm nuts at how many times I wash my boat. This is the first time I've had this scum line show up fishing in BL. I think it's from those patches of foam I see floating around the lake.

Sometimes when i leave it overnight it has a line but comes right off with a brush and a little soap..

Get it clean and wax your hull. Cleans easy after a good wax job.

X1000, but you'll definitley have to wax after cleaning.

I use Bass Boat Saver with good results. You can spray it on everything and just wipe it off. Purchased at Gulf Coast Boats in Lafayette. Apply it at the launch before the boat dries. Works really well.

available at walmart (near furniture polish) for 5$. been using it for years. won't hurt gelcoat, wipe on wipe off one pass with a damp soaked rag. a must. Even gets sticky oil tar off

Fiberglass stain remover (FSR). Its a blue gel you just brush on and wait 5 mins then hose off, works great for me. I have found it at most boating and outdoor store, i think wal mart might have it also for around $10.00.
