Anchor ???

I've got a 22 foot bay boat..got one of those grappling hook style anchors but I think I need another more effective anchor. What size (pounds) do you think I need to fish Big Lake and the jetties?
Slip ring? Recommendations? Thanks in advance...

Anchoring in the channel at the jetties can be a challenge during peak current flows. This will require a heavier anchor and a longer anchor line than most other local applications, and is not really something I'd recommend. Better to fish on the outside of the jetties during peak current flows.

Size and weight of the anchor are important but if you don't have chain attached between the anchor and the rope then even a large heavy anchor won't be very effective. Not saying that you won't get lucky and get it to bite sometimes but having the chain attached helps out dramatically.

x100000

gotta have a chain...at least 3ft

I always use a danforth anchor

BIG RED 1983 06-13-2012 09:28 AM

What does the chain do for the anchor?

helps it dig down... trust me it will make a world of difference

Thanks for the input..I always have used an anchor chain, just wondering how heavy an anchor I should use for my boat size. I've never used a "danforth/fluke" style anchor..always used the grappling hook style or the mushroom style for soft bottoms.

And you're right mathgeek..no intention of anchoring "inside" the jetties..just on the outside.

i wanna say I have an 8lb anchor and run a 24ft Triton LTS.... It sticks pretty quick most of the time

Wow..thanks "W"..lots of good reviews on this anchor..BTW, where is the west marine store in Lake Charles, I know it used to be off the 210 loop not too far from L'Auberge, but that location looks closed.

It's still there.

The chain helps the anchor pull parallel with the bottom not up towards the boat. I use a danforth 8lbs anchor with 5' of 3/8" chain. It works great in the mud, but sometimes struggles on rocky bottoms like at some of the older nearshore rigs.

I have an anchor I might be interested in getting rid of. It's to big for my boat.

I have same grappling hook style anchor and same size boat, but I do have a couple feet of heavy duty chain. Never had a problem getting it to bite at the jetties.

you might want to get a mitey mite style also. it is the one with the bendable tines. they work much better on oyster reefs than the danforth style.
