Killer day

Headed down to fourchon today with my fiancé , was greeted at bell pass with sloppy seas so we ran in and back out thru the bay to hit the islands , caught about 20 trout on top water, nothing over 3-3.5 lbs , the wind laid down around 9 so we ran 25 miles offshore . Started catching mangroves every cast , saw tank cobia at every rig but they wouldn't touch the pink jig . Finally at the last rig I'm reeling in a 14" mangrove and a 3-4' cuda starts to chase it but then a 70# cobia starts to chase the cuda . At this point I'm trying to see who's gonna eat who when the friggin cuda jumps out of the water and lunges straight toward me !! It got 6' out the water n clear the front deck of the boat.... Guys on the rig were going nuts !! I remembered I handsome glow curly tail cobia grubs , once they started circling I pitched big boy a glow grub n boom he took it . Untied the rig hook to get it away from the rig and it was on!!! About 15 mini to the fight line goes limp!!! Kori was video taping it ... Can't post video due to langauge lol! Guys on rig an myself estimated it at 70+ lbs!!!! , ended withh 20 trout, 20 mangroves. Heading in we got caught in a very bad storm, sideways rain 30-40 mph winds multiple water spouts. Took us 1.5 hours to make it back from our last rig at ST63. Pretty gnarly how in a blink of an eye it can't turn into a bad situation . I'll post pics after we get back in town,we r at the camp all weekend in grand isle

Good report, Poxie.
Glad y'all had a good time and made it in safe.
I know this probably sounds like the "old man" in the group but you and Ms Kori wear those PFD's when y'all are out there!

Here is one of the 150qt ice chests from yesterday, sure would have looked alot nicer with that stud cobia hanging out of it!! Anyways fished again today have 5 guys on the boat today in less than favorable weather/wind. Our mission catch enough trout to feed 15 people that are at the camp . We caught 100's of undersized trout and prolly only had 20 keeper specks but white trout..... Whattttt! I never cleaned so many 10" white trout in my life..... Mission accomplished everyone gets fed tonite!!

Didn't weigh any for star but biggest one was right under 10lbs.

Best thing to help me catch em was the right rod n reel . Rod -shimano trevala heavy, reel-shimano bait runner . First I start to chum em up with cut pogie , few pcs at a time just enough to get em curious but not a meal , then a tiny tiny circle hook I think a #4 frenzy I either bury it in a pc of cut pogie or a live shrimp hooked thru the head horn . I never use croaker cuz they r to hard to keep alive . In clean water I start out with 40lb fluorocarbon but move down in size if they won't hit it. So I cast up to the rig n that shimano bait runner has a little lever u flip which allows you to feed line of so there is NO tension on drifting chunk of shrimp . Yellow power pro helps , just watch your line n it's like catching bass you'll see slack start to come out of the line , BOOM set the hook n pull em out the rig by walking to back of boat.

SWEET! That is one fine ride bro. I wanted to break the jetties so bad today, but just couldn't pull the trigger. I see a catamaran in my future

fishinpox 06-16-2012 09:16 PM

Yeah kori keeps droppin hints about a bigger offshore boat, maybe after we build the new house n crank out a pup or 2 I buy a cat

southern151 06-16-2012 09:18 PM

After you crank out a pup, especially after two, fishing is somethin you do on vacation...which you never have time for!

That's just my experience though.
