fishing the jetties
 

I have never been to the jetties at the mouth of big lake. can someone tell me, is it possible to fish there from the bank or can you not get to deep enough water from the bank?

I'm assuming that your talking about the old jetties on the south end of Big Lake...you have to get there by boat.

No I talking about the jetties in the gulf, at the mouth of the ship channel is what i shouldve said. might be a stupid question, like i said never been there. dont even know it is possible to get there.

Yes you can fish there. There is a park there with a fishing pier and for a small fee you can fish all day.

The jetties are mostly a bottom fishing proposition and most anglers will catch 10 black drum and 10 gafftop catfish for every redfish, and most of the redfish will be bulls.

If I catch 10 drum, a bunch of trash and 2 reds, and bull reds at that! Sounds like a great day! Would love to fish the lake but I don't have a boat. Yet!

If you prefer to catch fewer gafftops and hardheads, use broken crab instead of cut or finger mullet. I also think crab beats mullet for drum and redfish at the jetties. You need a long, surf casting rod to get the bait further into the channel. You also need a good selection of weights including 4 and 6 oz pyramids to hold the bottom. And you will probably break off a lot on the bottom. The big advantage to a boat is you can pick a good spot in the channel and let directly down rather than casting across the rocks on the bottom. A boat also lets you fish the surf outside the channel when conditions suggest this is the better play. Days right before a cold front can even the odds when your location is limited.

4 and 6 oz weights huh didn't think I'd need something that heavy. Thanks for the tip don't have anything in the box anywhere near that.

I have filled the boat up with 20-25" reds down there with dead shrimp on a half oz lead head. Lot of trout there also.

From my experiences at the jetties......If tide is moving it will be reds & trout in majority, once tide goes slack, drum and sheepshead, and gaff-top will make up the majority of catch.

And...... if you are fishing from a boat out past half way on the jetties, try using live bait and a cork up next to the rocks to catch trout.

Also, soft plastic will catch trout and red's sometimes. Chartreuse curly tail grub worked good on trout and reds one trip to the jetties.

do yall know is this place usually packed with people and can you walk out onto the rocks?
