Mercury Pro XS

How many of y'all are running a Pro XS on an haynie or any other boat? How well do they hold up? And why a Pro XS over a yamaha four stroke.

Yamahas are junk that is why you see so many of them in repair shops.

250 Pro XS is a good fit for a 24ft haynie!

Neither get a Suzuki.... Lots of Haynes have a pro xs hanging on em though

ricky2110 07-15-2012 12:37 PM

I do not know anyone with a pro xs on their rig that did not have a problem at one point or another. lucky for them all these motors were under warrenty. "W" has an optimax and is the only person I asked with a new merc that is problem free. Thats one out of six people I talked to and he is the only one running the optimax, everyone else running the Pro xs in 225-250hp. Im in the market for a used boat and walked away from a fine shearwater because of the black pro xs on the back.

When I had my F150 yamaha all I did was put gas and regular yearly maint.

whunter29 07-15-2012 12:38 PM

Look how many older model Mercurys are still on the water and running and then look for older Yamahas I guarantee there are way more Mercurys than Yamahas. Yamaha = short lived expensive to maintain junk.

whunter29 07-15-2012 12:47 PM

I base my statements on what I have been told about their reliability from two different dealers mechanics who both told me there are much better motors out there than Yamahas. I was told their engines have corrosion issues which can get very expensive and that Yamaha doesn't try to fix their issues like other motor manufacturers.

jchief 07-15-2012 12:50 PM

I know several people that have over 1000 hours on their Yamahas with no problems.

Top Dawg 07-15-2012 12:50 PM

Look at what 90% of offshore charter boats run. I could care less either way. They're both good engines. I've always been a mercury fan. But if I were to buy a new boat it would have a yamaha 4 stroke on it.

Or a zuke

250 xs have more problems than 225 pro xs. 225 is way to go

My brother just took his off his boat (2008 Pro XS 250). It blew up 4 weeks ago at Spicers- calon flew 15 feet in air and flames shot out the side- loudest noise I ever heard. Women and children were running, after I shat in my pants we had to extinguish it. Motor was under warranty but mercury would not pay said a fuel float stuck causing gas and vapors to flood the calon. He made a claim and is now installing new Suzuki 225. Will be selling Pro XS, motor still starts, compression is good and lower unit looks great.
