I am planning to go scout and was wondering what areas most of ya'll target. Has anyone launched at Salters Bluff lately and does anyone hunt or fish up that way or do ya'll stay down south around Nibblets Bluff?

It's been years since I hunted that area but I always launched at Nibletts Bluff....

Be very careful as it is very, very easy to get turned around in these woods. Bring a GPS and even mark your trail as you go.

There are a lot of sloughs to walk through with heavy trees, so a GPS may not work very well.

I wouldn't step foot out of my boat out there for another month or so, at least wait till a cool front comes thru...

Big Bayou is one of my normal fishing haunts and that place is ALIVE with all sorts of critters (remember my wild hog encounter), hell the wasp nests alone would keep me out of the bushes !!!

I have only been there once since Rita and that was 3 years ago. I hunted there fairly often 10+ years ago.

Rita took out ~1/2+ of the trees/tree tops. This really makes walking hard.....maybe not too bad by now. The undergrowth got really thick with lots of small new trees and bushes.

South of Nibletts Bluff park is most swampy land with some dry ground near the water. Going north the ground is mostly dry but lots of slews to cross. There should be a fair hog population.

When there.....pay attention to the water level. There is 4" to 8" tide level change. If you go back in toward the end of a bayou (slew) into shallow water, you could have a problem getting out if the water drops some. The same is true for crossing some slews.

If you ride over to the west side of the island, the ground is even higher and there was areas that had lots of Oak trees. I don't know how many are left after Rita.

If Toledo Bend starts releasing water [has not happened in a long time] the island can go 99% under water.

Bring 2 Thermocells.

We use to hunt the area around Salters Bluff and I know about getting turned around so I keep GPS on and bring compass, I am told that its getting better as far as the trees down and such but I guess we are just gonna have to go walk and look I am just curious bout south end vs north end.

I have hunted both areas and seen deer in both. I would say that you have a lot more choices in the northern part of the island.

Where is the Salters Bluff boat launch? Which road is it on?

I do pretty good every year on squirrels in there around nibblets

I miss hunting out there but I do know personally that it's easy to get turned around out there.

Made three trips last year and seen nothing but hogs I scouted a couple of times and couldn't find much deer sign because the hogs had taken over.... Every oak ridge I hunted the previous season had no acorns because the hogs had moped em up.... Pest

I saw 3 deer the first two mornings of skirl season last year. Had a buck walk 10 yards from me. It's thick but if you scout you can find some nice spots.

Shoot em all.... I slung some arrows at em
