What is the best knife for cleaning redfish? Burned up two electric fisherman yesterday on them.

mriguy 09-30-2012 03:29 PM

American Angler. I think it has metal gears.

I get a serrated kitchen knife and just cut right behind the gills down to the bone on both sides then use the electric knife to fillet it from there. Works really good, the first cut is what seems to dull my knives and this works well. You eliminate cutting thru the tough scales. Or just get a Dexter and don't worry bout it

I second American Angler! After burning up two MisterTwisters I used the AA and it is night and Day better.

American Angler, IMO........And I used to be a Mr Twister disciple.

Sawzall with a long blade

capt hoop 09-30-2012 06:23 PM

Dexter roast beef slicer is the best for cleaning redfish. Hamilton beach makes the best electric knife.

YellaBlazer 09-30-2012 06:26 PM

Blue Tournament Choice knife from Academy. Open the box and throw away the blades. Buy a set of Mr. Twister blades with the cutting point. Works on any size redfish.

trtdds 09-30-2012 06:29 PM

My vote goes to American Angler. They make a couple size blades and the big one works well on Reds.

budndawn 09-30-2012 07:32 PM

American angler for sure

Throw away your electric knife. Check out this guy cleaning a 30 lb redfish in 18 seconds with a good ole fashioned sharp knife. Nothing to it! :)

calcutta37 09-30-2012 08:41 PM

Get you a bubba blade they are sharp and clean reds with no prob..

Riceland 09-30-2012 08:50 PM

for reds and similar, dexter serrated, then mr twister elec knife to finish off. Cleaned manny fish with both, no problems yet

latravcha 09-30-2012 09:06 PM

I quit using electrics a few years. I use a dexter serrades to cut reds fom the bone then finish off with a 9 inch dexter. I use just the 9 inch dexter on trout.

really I started using a filet knife about a year ago, always used electric, but with a regular filet knife your filets turn out to look neater and cleaner cut. and after doing it for a while, if you keep your blade sharp you can still clean just as fast.

What kind of knife do you use, pretty much all I clean is catfish and I had an old knife that seemed stay sharper longer and take an edge easier it walked off on me one day and I bought 8" rap aka I believe and it's easy to put an edge on but it dulls out after pretty much every fish
